David Newton: Elflein at C in 2022

According to another article I read written by Newton, Elflein had (going from memory--did not save the link) something like a 64 PFF grade as a guard, and was rated at 90 (above Moton's 87) as a center.  Perhaps Newton is basing his assumption about Elflein on these numbers.

Isn’t a PFF rating of 50 “average” to them?  His play definitely seemed below average, so if that’s average may God help us.  Our interior is horrific.  We need OL help, period.  Trade down and get more picks?  Great!  Pick the stud at 6?  Great!  I don’t care how they do it, but this line is so devoid of talent aside from a couple guys.

I told you after about 3 weeks of Elf playing C, he wasnt dogshit and maybe can be counted on for future. Hes not in Kalil of "not worry about finding a upgrade." Panthers need help and if Elf can limit for one less "find replacement" thats soooooo needed.

My OL hope is as follows-

LT- 2022 1st(even with trading back)

LG- Chirst

C-Elf

RG- FA or Brown or Erv or trade or UDFA savior or PS surpise

RT- Moton

Still need swing tackle, 6th OLman, young project in order for 8 men game day jerseys. Need a miracle worker as OL coach too.

Sign James Daniels in free agency. 24 year old guard with experience at center. 5 years/50 mil. This locks up a guard spot with positional flexibility.

Then we can try Elf at center and see if it works through the first third of the 22 season.

Im currently undecided between targeting a QB or T in the 1st. Right now I would love to trade back and pick Cross somewhere in the 10-15 range and acquire some day 2 picks.

I would be hopeful with a line of

Cross-Christensen-Elf-Daniels-Moton

QB in 23 and try to sign Trubisky to compete with Darnold in 22 (aka start over Darnold).

    • Yeah, banking on his hands, vertical, height etc. Thing is we have a processor with an average arm, not a gunslinger so he might not even get those 50/50's to even show what he can do. XL has some of the same BY issues, if he doesn't get some 50/50 throws his way he's going to be stuck catching a lot of expected shallow crossers aka dinks and dunks
    • Really like him. He will be great for Bryce. I hope he doesn't get a lot of push off calls as he did that on some of those catches.
    • Everyone talks about how important it is to draft a QB in round 1 and have the "5th year option" I haven't seen it play out the well over the past several years. The good/great QB' aren't playing the first 5 years under their original deal.  After year 3 or 4 they are getting mammoth extensions. Having Penix take over in year 3 may actually save the Falcons some money over the next 5 seasons. I doubt they'd give him an extension after his first year as a starter if he took over the starting position after the guaranteed portion of Kurt Cousins new deal ends in 2025.   In terms of playing time, Penix 3 years as a starter would be ending with the 5th year of his rookie deal (assuming his option was picked up). The money Penix would be making in year 5 of a rookie contract would be significantly less than the upper echelon 5 year starters are making now.
