Was Rhule forced by Tepper to hire experienced coaches?

I think one of the unforeseen benefits of having a more extensive history in the NFL as opposed to coming in pretty much off the street (which is essentially what Rhule did) is having a network. Rhule had none, which is why he went with what he was familiar with....coaches and players from colleges he had coached himself.

And also why he went for Darnold. How many teams had Rhule interviewed before? Well 2018 there was the colts. Next year the Jets, then us the following to year.

Thats also about the limit of his familiarity with teams and players in the pros. Yeah, sure there was that season where he was the ass line coach an eternity ago.

But his limited experience and familiarity with players in the league brought him back to really the only QB in the NFL he didn't coach that he had any familiarity with, Sam Darnold.

The smaller your circle, the smaller your world. Small world translates to limited ability to compete in a bigger world.

Makes a lot of sense...

Posted this summary elsewhere but it applies here as well...

OL Coach Pat Meyer (hired as OL Coach - Steelers)
DL Coach Frank Okam (still unemployed)
ST Coordinator Chase Blackburn (still unemployed)

LATERAL MOVES

WR Coach Frisman Jackson (Steelers)
TE Coach Brian Angelichio (Vikings)
Assistant OL Coach Tony Sparano Jr (Giants)
Secondary Coach Jason Simmons (Raiders)

NEW HIRES

OC Ben McAdoo
WR Coach Joe Dailey (McAdoo connection)
TE Coach Kevin Gilbride Jr (internal promotion)
OL Coach James Campen (McAdoo connection)
Assistant OL Coach Robert Kugler (Campen connection)
DL Coach Paul Pasqualoni
Secondary Coach Steve Wilks
ST Coordinator Chris Tabor

Only Blackburn and Okam haven't been picked up at this time. Okam isn't a shock. Wait and see on Blackburn.

Here's an update I wasn't expecting to see...

Okam joins Josh McDaniels staff in Vegas

(gotta wonder if maybe Jason Simmons put in a good word for him)

So at this point, three of the four coaches Matt Rhule fired have found new jobs. Only Chase Blackburn remains unemployed.

    • To be fair, I kind of like Bo but he was BAD this past weekend.
    • What I noticed was Tmac running free on deep routes a lot. Can we just get PJ or Hooker to throw go routes on every play for the rest of the season? It would be more exiting than this current mess.
    • We're all aware of the frustrating Week 1 for Carolina, but there's reasons to see Arizona as a possible get-right game. While this will be Zona's home opener (requiring the team to travel out west), they were barely able to hold on to a lead against the hapless Saints who got a chance to tie the game up with 2min left that ended at the ARI 18. Kyler Murray was 21/29 with 2 passing TDs but for only 163yds (5.6yd AVG) and a QBR of 50.9 (RTG 108.8). He was also sacked five times for 33yds. Meanwhile, Spencer Rattler went 27/46 and was sacked just once for 6yds. Kyler also carried the ball seven times for 38yds. James Conner struggled to get going (12 carries, 39yds) but Trey Benson had a good day thanks to a 52yd scamper (8 carries, 69yds). Arizona has weapons in MHJ and McBride, but the CBs have been playing well enough for McBride to be the true focus of the defense. MHJ had a good game though against the Saints, so hopefully Jaycee + Mike Jackson can disrupt that connection. The Cardinals also aren't a disciplined team... with an opportunity to put the Saints away they gave up a TFL and a holding penalty before having the field goal attempt blocked. Their OL suuuuucks at run blocking and got better pass blocking from their TEs in week 1 than they did from any OL except for Paris Johnson Jr. Isaiah Adams and Hjalte Froholdt especially had issues as did Jonah Williams. If the Panthers' revamped DL can't get pressure against them it might be worth giving the alarm a pull.
