Salt 'n' Pepper

Reading that Observer article brought back many fond memories of Salt and Pepper when they played togeather in the bygone days of 1996 and 1997.

The articles content also gave me a feeling of sadness because those times I enjoyed then have have long passed, just like Sam Mills and Kevin Greene.

I hated the fact that  by 1998 Lathons NFL career was cut short by repeated injuries and sadly he never had a season anything like his Pro Bowl year of 1996 again.

Lamar signed this jersey and hat for 14 yr. old me after the Panthers/Chiefs preseason game here in 1996, a jersey I bought that summer when visiting a friend in Raleigh. I was the only person he signed anything for in the entire stadium. Pretty cool gesture.

The hat was also signed by Sam Mills himself, Greg Skrepenak, and 7th round draft pick holdout Matt Finkes. The glove was game-worn by the receiver we don't speak of and I've just never reopened the frame to remove it.

What? I love Lathon, but he wasnt even the best pass rusher for any year he was on the team. Burns also has more sacks these last 3 years than Lathon from 95-97, so you`re still not making sense.

You just aren't smart.

First of all Lamar didn't have any knees left when he got here from Houston.

Secondly he made big plays in big moments in big games something Burns doesn't do.

Thirdly he brought the pain. When has Brian Burns ever hurt someone? He tackles soft.

Lamar pressures were hits not just getting close.

Burns is a pussy compared to Lamar.

Lamar used to come talk to us before the games.

We chipped in for one of his fines against Steve Young and the locker room went crazy.

Lamar Lathon is the only Jersey I have ever purchased and the only one I'll wear. He played defense the way you are supposed to.

He wanted to get to the QB as bad as a scuba diver out of air wants to get to the surface.

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
