Brugler: Post Draft Mock

I'm the wake of today's trade, The Athletic's draft guy Dane Brugler has put up a new mock.

NFL Mock Draft 2023

Brugler argues that he'd take Young or Richardson but doesn't think we will. He also mentions having heard that Frank Reich "really likes' Will Levis after meeting with him at the Combine, but ultimately has us taking CJ Stroud.

Excerpts from his writeup...

In my opinion, Alabama’s Bryce Young is still the best pure quarterback in this draft, but Frank Reich said it himself at the combine: Young’s size “is a concern.” Enough to pass on him? Maybe.

Both Florida’s Anthony Richardson and Kentucky’s Will Levis have tantalizing traits, and there is plenty of smoke connecting Richardson to Carolina (beyond just the Cam Newton comparisons). If you’re going to trade the farm for the top pick, why not swing for the fences? Richardson has sky-high potential with his rare size/speed profile and promising passing traits. A possible Jacoby Brissett-Richardson pairing in the quarterback room makes sense.

I’ve also heard, though, that Reich really likes Levis, based on his tools and the time the two spent together at the combine.

But I keep coming back to Stroud, who I think is the new favorite to be the No. 1 pick. He is the quarterback that everyone in the room should be able to agree on because of one main factor: accuracy. His maturation at moving the pocket and creating second-chance plays might be what ultimately determines his ceiling, but Stroud has a very high floor in the NFL because of his natural throwing skills from the pocket.

I think Stroud has been underestimated.  Everyone doesn't necessarily knock him, but they get all enamored with Young and Richardson because those guys can sometimes make crazy plays.  Fools gold.

You need to watch a lot of Stroud film.  Stroud can do the same things.  The "problem" is that outside of the Georgia game, he wasn't really forced to with any regularity.  But it is there.

Most people just watch the Georgia game and go "He was pretty good, but it's one game".  Instead, watch all his other film first.  You will see mobility, runs and creativity scattered in the film.  Then watch Georgia.  You realize "Oh, this isn't a fluke.  This is him playing within his abilities against a team that can actually challenge him".

Only media types have gotten enamored with Richardson, IMO.

    • I'm honestly looking beyond DC at this point. He's too green and is making too many simple mistakes. I think he's gone after next year. I think the intention in LV was to use Mayer and Bowers similar to Gronk/Hernandez in NE. That's never really struck me as Carroll's MO though after watching him for years out here in Seattle.  He's talented enough and I think he just got lost behind the phenom that is Bowers because he couldn't develop in Carroll's system. I'm surprised Bowers is used as much as he is, though they really don't have anyone else. TE's don't really exist as focus receivers in Carroll's offense. I live in the PNW so I've been subjected to a lot of Seahawks football.  Coaches other utilize their TEs. We should too. Tremble is OK, but he's always been a project as a receiver. Again, all this is of we could get him at the right price. I wouldn't pay a lot because we need to spend on defense.
    • David. Hey, money talks.....it has been acknowledged that Tepper isn't shy on spending. He's had the NFL equivalents of used car salesman after used car salesman line up to grift him of a big chunk. Canales is one of them.  Until that changes, it's gonna be tough to build anything to last.
    • Well it's who they tied themselves to for at least another year but i agree. They will be lucky to find a useful contributor but until I see the DC situation change I am presuming it's SSDD. Well it sounds like maybe in 2027.
