Don't expect ‘The Chin' to patrol the sidelines in Charlotte anytime soon

Good read,That makes a lot of sense. But who knows

Economics

Cowher will be pricey, pushing $10 million a year.

That wouldn't be a problem, except hiring him would cause Jerry Richard-son to eat $6.5 million for the final year of John Fox's contract. And the final years of the deals of the coaching staff

Football

Nevermind the Panthers don't have the personnel to run a 3-4.There's no real place for Jon Beason or Thomas Davis in a 3-4. Inside linebackers in that style need to be stronger than fast,

Structure

Cowher is not going anywhere to be part of a management team; he's looking to run things

Goes on the list Personality and the steelers way.

Yea, thats what they said about the Packers this year.

............ they are Number 1 in total defense.

I hope he isn't. People see a ring and they think he is automatically one of the best coaches in history. But people tend to forget or ignore the fact that no HC has every one a SB with 2 different teams.

Yep. Mike Holmgren could've been the first to done that if the Seahawks won instead of the Steelers at Superbowl XL.

But again, not surprise Cowher may never be a coach here. Based on how much he is worth & the kind of defense he like to run, it's not worth the risk to do this. We can still find a new coach that can make us better anyway though.

Regarding the economics of it all, I think Jerry will make up the cost of eating Fox's salary because if the Panthers start next season with Fox as a HC the stadium will be 1/2 empty. If the team doesnt start of strong, forget it... could be another lost season.. Who knows how much the team makes with concessions but with a new HC next season I think the atmoshpere and attitude towards this team would be much better and as a result the fans will show up day 1. But who knows. Plus like others have said its not that uncommon to fire a coach while still under contract.

Regarding switching to a 3-4..... I am not sure if I like that either but who knows if Cowher will do that. Supposedly early on in his coaching career he ran a 4-3, I dont think that was in Pittsburg but at places he coached before there. He had coordinators that ran 3-4 so he went with that, and stayed with that. Here he might be look at the personel, stay with and bring in a 4-3 cooridinator.

That all be said , I am not 100% on bring in Cowher bandwagon.... I am on 100% of moving on from Fox.

I am starting to really like the 4-3 because think about how cheaply solid 4-3 talent can be had with all these teams switching to the 3-4. I mean DE that were awesome that can't make the transition to OLB. DT that can't make it as NT in 3-4 but are perfect for the 1 technique or 3-4 DE that are better at the 3 tech. Now is the time to be in a 4-3 base defense IMHO.

If a team really wants to get rid of a coach, they will eat the contract, it happens all time. So i don't care about that part. the rest are good points

THIS. If we keep Fox and continue to lose money as an organization then that is harmful. If you bring in someone new, and your team turns things around and your organization makes more money, than the one year hit on Fox is worth it.

there may not be anymore higher profile candidate than cowher but i don't think he's the best one.

he'd be better than fox overall and i like him more than the retreads but we can do better with one one of the up and comers of the coaching world. not getting cowher wouldn't be a problem.

still my vote....jim harbaugh. there are some other very good candidates out there that i would feel good about.

the wost thing that can happen is no change at all.

acceptable but not desirable is fox staying but brining in weis as OC (and keeping his nose out of the playcalling) and getting an upgrade at QB.

i just think this team needs a change at the top. they need a new face and new voice at HC.

I'll cast my vote there as well. Harbaugh is one helluva good coach.

More on why the 34 would not work

You would think Everette Brown could play the rush outside linebacker spot, but scouts who watched him at Florida State doubted whether he was fluid enough to stand up and cover. Nevermind there's not a viable nose tackle, that Damione Lewis has no real place in a 3-4, and guys such as Tank Tyler and Louis Leonard (and even Derek Landri) were acquired because they didn't have one either

One thing we're all missing is that the superbowl he won was one of the most controversial, terribly officiated games in history. They reversed 2 seahawks touchdowns off bullshit, Roethlisberger was given a TD when he didn't cross the plane, there were numerous bad calls etc.

On the other hand, our superbowl was lost by a field goal, to arguably the best team in football, who at the time had an unfair advantage with the whole videotaping our practices thing.

We're all so quick to judge Fox and place Cower high atop an ivory pedestal based on records and superbowl victories that we're missing exactly what happened each season to aid or hinder the success of each team and each coach. (division strength, strength of schedule, injuries, point spreads on games etc.)

I'd like to see a new coach next year, but I don't want a re-tread of Cower. I want an up and coming guy in the same vein as Tomlin/McDaniels/Harbaugh. If we can't find an exceptional new coach, then I'd rather stick with Fox and give him a chance to finish out his contract on a high note. Superbowl or bust next year for Fox.

    • Right now, XL is probably outside the top 100 NFL WR's. That is just not going to cut it.  He certainly could turn it around but our track record in this area is very well established. When our WR's bust, boy do they bust. XL looks exactly like so many of those cases.  XL has been the 9th most productive WR in that 2024 class and is likely to slip to 10th very soon as one of the guys who missed a large chunk of last season is about to pass him(Pearsall) in career production. That's not great for the 7th overall WR picked. It's a disappointment, without question. Even a the guy getting healthy scratches has still outperformed him so far.  And, for the record, it was a very, very productive WR class so far.
    • 4th read? On a playaction? Do you not watch the ALL 22? There were 4 receivers on that play. Only 2 went beyond 2 yards on a 10 yard crossing route in front of a single high safety. The TE stayed in to block before releasing on a drag route and was never a read. Coker was motioned to the right to pull a defender to the sideline. This was a clear flat route and hot if the defender came on a blitz. The RB stayed in to block on the right side. Coming out of the playaction Bryce spots the defender for a possible blitz and then goes to his primary receiver on his left. The only receiver on the left coming out of the playaction was TMac. He clearly follows TMac to the cross in front of the safety and looks off the safety to the left. This is not a read to XL. It's looking off the safety. He swings his vision back to his primary in TMac and throws the ball to the numbers (20) 10 yards over the head of the DB when TMac reaches the right hashes near the 30 yard line before TMac even makes a cut. Bryce was never leading or throwing to the receiver. He was throwing to a spot based on the movement of 2 defenders. It was up to TMac to make this play happen with perfect timing, release, sell and cut on his route. Give credit to the play design. The defense is playing that route as a sideline route and TMac makes it happen with his body position and control as he cuts/drifts 10 yards up field to the spot he knew it was going to before the play. If that were a 4th progression read out of a playaction, you'd see 4 hitch steps and the receiver would have been led to the sideline as TMac would have never known the ball was going to be thrown 10 yards over the DBs head on a 10 yard cross to the sideline. You can also tell this is the desgin as Bryce sets to the left out of the playaction with XL on his right before the cross. Then he takes 3 bounce steps to move with the pocket as XL is late to the cross. His first hitch step is to the right after TMac crosses, which is followed by an immediate throw before a cut is made by TMac. TMac was the only receiver to the left on Bryce's set, and he was one of 2 WRs to the right on Bryce's first and only hitch step. Give TMac and the play design a bulk of the credit. Bryce did well, but he didn't sell the playaction or a possible pass to XL very well. He did do very well at throwing to a predetermined spot on the field after TMac set up that crossing route perfectly with XL and Sanders both late on developing their routes. Did you catch all that on the play? For some reason, you think there were 4 progressions out of play action with the defense pressing, Bryce setting his hips to the left with all 3 receivers on the right side of what you think was his 4th option as the only receiver on the left at the snap, and only 1 hitch step to the right after TMac waits for XL to cross left. Why would you think a QB would set their hips to the left when their first 3 progressions are on the right side of the field?
    • Agreed, however there are many QBs that don't place it perfectly.
