11th pick in the draft to SF

It was Peppers insurance, turned out we didn't need it this year but we didn't know that at the time.

Would be nice to have a first round pick this year, but we have so many needs right now that it's gonna take allot more than just one draft pick to right the ship.

Well hopefully it cost them their job. I can't remember the last time a team traded a top 10 pick while getting so little compensation.

To be fair, I don't think the compensation -- Brown and Goodson -- can really be accurately evaluated after one season in which they played very limited roles.

But I do see your point, and I wish we had that pick right now.

Clearly Hurney and Fox had no idea we would be without a QB this year. They thought they were trading away a high 20's big, no biggie. If they knew they were trading a top 10 pick they would never have done it.

They lost that gamble, big time.

If they're not sacked for losing said gamble Richardson will alienate a good majority of the fan base.

richardson has to take a lot of the blame for this trade because he did not commit to fox and hurney long term and also didn't dismiss them. this put fox and hurney in a situation where they made a desperate and poor decision in an attempt to save their jobs.

trading for brown will end up hurting this team much more than the delhomme, peppers, gamble contracts will

That's actually an interesting point, and one I've never considered.

I want to mull that one over before I agree with it though.

I did.

Right up until camp. It was clear then we were going to be very ordinary.

I think that I had a "lets wait and see" thing going on.

IMO that home playoff loss was like losing the SB. It hurt us much more than any of us realize.

We were healthy last year, and lucky, I had no reason to believe that we would be that way this year. Add to that, we had one of our CAPTAINS demanding to be traded, and you have the makings of a poo show.

I thought we would have an up and down season, with Jake playing well at times, and at other times terrible. I didn't know that he couldn't throw the deep ball anymore, or I would have predicted this disaster. His arm is gone. Thanks for the memories Jake, and enjoy your fortune.

If only we could draft that FSU standout defensive end Everette Brown. He thought about coming out last year, but since he stayed another season and dominated the competition he's slated to go in the Top 10. He probably wouldn't fall to us anyways, but Fox and Hurney are stupid for not taking a shot at this kid.

I almost see what you did there.

I hate FSU, but I respect Bobby Bowden's evaluation of talent and he said that Brown made a mistake by coming out last year and that with another year of seasoning he could have been a Top 10 or Top 5 pick. I am inclined to agree with that.

Not that I don't bemoan the lack of a 1st round pick as much as the next guy, but we didn't exactly give the pick away for nothing in return. Brown is going to be fine.

And keep in mind, even Drew Brees was a 2nd round pick.

    • It's been many a year since we were in December talking about how games mattered for something other than draft order. This crazy, mixed up, unpredictable, maddening, uplifting and teeth gnashing season has certainly not been boring.
    • If you look at Brown and Horn's contracts, expect to pay above what he is likely actually worth. This is the Panthers suckage tax. Ultimately, much like Derrick Brown, he has steadily improved over time and that's what you want out of your young first round draft picks. He was one of the biggest and most important question marks coming into the season and he has answered it conclusively. He is "the guy" at LT. Great news, one less position of extreme importance to have to attempt to remedy.
    • This is maddening because, well, it's so up and down. When the kid's on, he can be great. When he's mediocre, we can still win based on a strong running game and good defense. When he's bad, and over his history he's this more than not, then it's a sad show that no one could win with. How can anyone know what is going to happen right now? Really. It's like picking one flake in a snow globe and shaking it once a week... there is no telling where it will end up. Things I did see on Sunday from Bryce: his teammates love him; he can make the big throws with good protection and good effort from his receivers. He isn't afraid to run. He can rise up against the best in competition (but he can also sink to the level of bad competition).  All I can say is if Canales goes with an aggressive game plan for Bryce that leans on a hot-hand running game, the team can beat anyone. If there's any wishy-washy play calling, then Bryce melts and couldn't beat anyone.  Maybe the person Bryce needs to win over more than anyone is Canales.
