Show your friend a dictionary.

Finding some words saying contracts should be upheld doesn't erase the history of capitalists breaking them.

Your social contract theory is not enforceable in litigation.  Your lawyer wouldn't even try to make that argument for fear of being laughed out of court.  It's not a serious argument.  If it makes you feel better about yourself to make that argument, well, okay, I guess.  Good for you.

He is widely considered a top 5-10 player at his position, so he will be paid as a top 3 player this year and next year 2-3 players will overtake him, and then another 2-3 players the year after. That is the standard model in the NFL. He gets paid with the expectation that he will perform accordingly. If he underperforms everyone should feel free to complain. Fairly straightforward.

Yeah, what I'm saying is - that's not the principled stance that people are acting like they're adopting.  Essentially saying "yeah let's pay our best players...but if they fail to justify what they're earning, then let's cut them and save some of that money" is a pretty milquetoast generic position that pretty much sits right on the fence between players and owners.  It's hardly "siding with the players".

As long as Burns produces at an elite level, it doesn't matter whether he is paid $26 million versus $30 million.  It only matters if he doesn't produce at an elite level because no one ever questions overpaying a player that produces.
