Matt Moore one of the best throwing over 20 yards

from Pat Yasinskas

"Moore’s having great success throwing the deep ball. Moore has the NFL’s best passer rating on throws of longer than 20 yards with a minimum of 10 attempts. On that type of throw, Moore has completed seven of 17 passes for 246 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and a 128.1 passer rating..."

Delhomme only had a 34.1 passer rating on throws longer than 20 yards.

Moore also is leading the NFL in passer rating on throws between the numbers with a 123.0 rating. That's better than New Orleans' Drew Brees, who is second in the league in that category, with a 115.8 rating. Before Delhomme went down for the season with an injury, he had a 61.4 rating on passes between the numbers.

But, this is meaningless...

Can't be, according to local experts he has no arm strength.

Here's another interesting stat. Out of the QBs in the NFL this year, Matt Moore has the highest percentage of his passing attempts going for 40+ yards. Here's the breakdown:

% of Passing attempts completed for 40+ yards

  • Matt Moore - 5.2%
  • Donovan McNabb - 4.2%
  • Aaron Rodgers - 3.1%
  • Tony Romo - 3.1%
  • Matt Shaub - 2.8%
  • Ben Roethlisberger - 2.7%
  • Eli Manning - 2.5%
  • Philip Rivers - 2.5%

This suggests that we may have the most explosive passer in the NFL. How much of that you can credit to Steve Smith is up to you, but Matt Moore is definitely proving to be a great downfield passer.

Seven completions....amazing! I can throw a ball 20 yards and I'm not an NFL QB. Apparently Pat never took a statistics class or he'd know that stats are highly skewed in small sample sizes (10 attempts sample).

Yes, he does have a relatively weak arm or we'd be talking about passes over 40 yards.

I'm not sure what is going on with the Moore-crush here--whether people hate Jake that much or they think this guy is a legit starter.

I know I'm going to called a hater, that's fine, at least I'm not the one man-crushing all over Moore.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
