Trade Burns for Jaylon Johnson and some picks

I doubt we trade him but I don't think you understand it's not just for a 1st round pick.  It SHOULD be a 1st PLUS player or more picks PLUS the money we can use for Luvu, Brown, and another player.  I like Burns and am ok if we keep him, I just think it makes more sense to extend Brown, Luvu, add another player AND get some picks/players to work vs paying a pass rushing specialist on a bottom tier roster that kind of money.

This is sort of my thought process as well.

1 - Get a fair deal for Burns signed. 

2 - If you can't get him signed long term now we trade him for picks plus a player and use the money saved to lock up Brown and another player long term and then draft offense or use the picks to move up and draft offense.

This is a smart move for them at low cost. The Bears have the most cap room in the NFL next year. Money isn't an issue. 

Sweat in 2023:

8 games played , 32 tackles, 11 solo, 6.5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, 1 pass defense and 7.5 stuffs.

Burns in 2023:

7 games played, 21 total tackles, 14 solo, 5 sacks, 1 forced fumble, no passes defended and 4 stuffs. 

They are getting a Burns level player this season and he will only cost a second plus he won't get Burns level money in the extension.

He's going to get the bag. You don't trade a mid-30s pick to then not retain the guy. Just like Burns has the Panthers over the barrel in terms of negotiating leverage, so too does Sweat with the Bears. Guaranteed he's going to get more than Rashan Gary just got. I bet $27m per year is the absolute floor for AAV for his deal, probably going to be more than that.

And I think Burns is going to get more than that. Burns argument just simply needs to be "Nobody through my age in the history of the NFL has as many sacks as me, ever". Or at least that was true last year and he is on pace for another 10+ sack season. Burns is going to beat both the Gary deal and the Sweat deal. Chicago had over 100 million in cap space for next year. They can give this kid 28 per year and still have over 70 million left.

I'm betting Jaylon Johnson wants to reset the CB market. Currently the only ones making $20m+/per are Jaire Alexander and Denzel Ward. He definitely wants to beat Jaire Alexander's 4-year/$84m salary average.

I would make the pitch:

**Panthers get**

CB Jaylon Johnson

Chicago Bears 2nd round pick ( Currently 37 )

Chicago Beards 3rd round pick ( Currently 68 )

This would give Carolina picks 34, 37, 66 and 68. 

**Bears get**

DE Brian Burns

 

We get a long term secondary player and some decent draft capital back after the trade up to get Young, and extend him for significantly cheaper than what Burns is going to get. Chicago gets the pass rushing DE they have been after and can sign him easily as they have the most cap space going into next season and the second most the year after that. I also think it makes sense for Chicago to trade Justin Fields right now ( I am not sure I believe his dislocated thumb can't grip a football this week ) and they already announced TBag is the starter this week. I think that is to give Tyson all the reps with the ones while they take offers for Justin so they can get some of this draft capital back. 

Johnson is an 84.4 grade on PFF is thats your kind of thing. And he is doing this with no pass rush. Chicago is dead last with 10 sacks as a team. 5 lower than the next lowest team. Chicagos leading sack guy has 2 on the season. 

This looks like a perfect fit for both teams, just not sure we could get a 2nd and 3rd. Probably more like a 2nd and 4th or 5th, which I would still do!

I don't sub to PFF so I asked for the PFF ranks on Burns compared to Sweat, here is where they are at vs the run. So Sweat has been more productive this season as a pass rusher and he is significantly better in the run game.
