How about Steve Wilkes?

I agree that they played well.  Held the best qb in the league to 25 points in five qtrs, and one td was caused by a muffed punt.

I disagree that they don't make it without him.  They almost made it last year but got screwed at the qb position.

I agree Wilks called a great 3.5 quarters - unfortunately the game is 4 quarters and crazy things like that misplayed/muffed punt played a part in the Chiefs being able to come back.

I wholeheartedly agree that the 49ers defense was the most talented in the NFL this year and *if* Ryans was back they would have won that Super Bowl.  The personnel on this years 49ers defense was better than last year's.  The injuries were unfortunate, especially to Greenlaw - but I still cannot for the life of me figure out why he went zone - whether it be cloud, cover 2, cover 0.  They were doing what they needed to do to beat the Chiefs:  keep Kelce in check, stuff Pacheco, and keep Mahomes in the pocket.  They abandoned it late in the 3rd quarter, into the 4th and OT.

Wilks and the D aren't the only reason SF lost that game, but I guarantee you there were players on the 49ers D who didn't think Wilks was the right guy along with Shanahan and most likely the 49ers FO.

Why’s that? He got fired here and went to the Super Bowl the next year. You could say people wanting to get rid of him didn’t age well.

This isn’t the flex you think it is.

They were the #1 defense in the league when he came onboard. This isn't the flex you think it is.

So you’re saying he brought a very bad situation to an above average situation in Carolina, and then maintained greatness in SanFran? The Office Smile GIF

Now do the Cardinals when he was HC and Missouri when he was DC or do these not count? Also the Niners had a drop off in defense despite adding Chase Young midseason and then he was fired after one season….

Why do you think Chase Young was traded so willingly?

Also, Arizona has been an ass organization for quite some time. Much like Carolina, one guy isn’t going to come in and clean everything up in one season.

I mean WIlks put Young in as a starter after they traded a 3rd round pick to rent him for half a year.  He got plenty of playing time on that roster.  Ryans didn't have him last year and the defense played better.

He brought Carolina to "above average" but made Arizona go dead last?  Hmm it's not adding up.  Wilks is a great person, a decent DC, and just not that good of a HC.

You can harp on a bad situation he was put into 6 years ago for one season. I’ll factor in the entire equation.

He was successful as a positions coach here. He was successful as a DC here. He was successful as an interim HC here. He was successful as a DC with SF.

You have an interesting definition of successful. “Made every defense he coordinated worse” doesn’t fit my definition. “Was marginally better than Rhule” doesn’t either.

Well if you’re considering the 9ers defense was the best in the league the year prior to his arrival then he would have to replicate best in the league to not see a drop off. So that doesn’t statistically provide any relevance to the discussion and just comes across as nitpicky.

Yeah that argument wasn’t holding any water regarding Wilks. Not sure why people hate the guy. I think there are better DCs and HCs but he’s far from what people make him out to be.

He was a downgrade from Saleh and Ryans but it was a small step.

IMO, he is the scapegoat for Shanahan's failures.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
