Agent: Panther's Having a Firesale, Have Thrown Away 2010 Season

I’ve been talking to a lot of agents over the past few days and it’s hard to find one who has a client the Panthers seem interested in signing.

Take this for what it’s worth, but here’s one agent’s opinion of the Panthers: “They’re having a fire sale. They have thrown away the 2010 season and (owner Jerry) Richardson is going to be pushing for a lockout (after the 2010) season. They are going to be playing Big Lots football in 2010.”

Personally, I find it hard to believe Richardson will be “pushing” for a lockout since I don’t think that benefits anyone, players or owners. But I understand what he’s saying — that Richardson is trying to pinch the players’ union as much as possible by keeping salaries low.

I think it’s still too early in free agency to rush to any judgements. The Panthers normally don’t make big moves early on but wait until the initial wave of big spending cools down. So let’s be patient and see.

So releasing Jake, Diggs, Johnson, Lewis and Kemo and allowing Brayton and Muhammed to walk is a "fire sale"?

So far, the only impact player we've lost is Peppers. Jake was an impact player last year, but in the wrong way.

Like many teams, we're using this uncapped year to clear out these older, expensive guys out for younger promising talent.

Up to this point, I'd say the agent is spot on...

I'm really starting to worry that we'll be shipping DeAngelo out soon...

I disagree that right now it's a firesale.

Now, I am with you on the DeAngelo thing. When we start shipping out players under contract who are still productive on the field, then it's time to start worrying. I just don't think that is going to happen but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried about it.

So far, all I can say is they're getting rid of bad contracts and avoiding new bad ones.

Seriously thats exactly what I see to, face it Peppers wasn't going to play here for 8-10 million a season and he's not worth much more then that long term. People need to calm down, we weren't a big player in FA last year either and we would have done just fine without a turnover machine at QB the first 12 games.

    • Not sure how much he was a long term piece of this team.   Sucks to not have him as part of the rotation.   Looks like it's Lee Hunter time.
    • This post was an error. Oops and sorry for the errors in the previous one. Too slow to edit.   We’ll see what they do.
    • I am not sure he will put the over the games but we’ll probably have them.   Two things I am thinking.  We have 4 preseason games.  All the coaches have enough service time to know the standards that are in place for decades. If I recall it was play your starters just a series to start woth and build it up until week theee where play a lot and you have week four to set hour roster. Evaluate before cuts.   Bevell will certainly have the whole thing down pat.   I’d they don’t do the fries and frie air will worry too. Because it is set up to do that.     I have said since they went t three preseason people have to figure a new way are still feeling it out and trying things.  We don’t have to this year.
