spending 90 million on running backs, likely weakening areas like D-Line...does this make us a better team or an unbalanced team?

90 million plus some O-line cost for 30 snaps a game?

like what was said earlier, if they structure the contracts right it's the right move. a front loaded contract for williams gives them more options in the future. there were estimates in another thread saying we'd be $40 mill under the cap if there was one so 6 mill a piece for both backs still leaves us with $28 to play with. a little early for a stewart deal anyways. how much time does he have left on his rookie deal?

Even balanced teams have strengths and weaknesses. The running game has been our strength since 2008, and it would be a shame to diminish our greatest strength.

I do see your point, and I think Williams and Sutton/Goodson or Stewart and Sutton/Goodson would still be a formidable tandem, but if we can manage to keep both, I'd like to.

I hate to say it, but.....

We are getting the best value for D Will and Stew right now. IMO the best overall move for the FO is to trade the one that you don't see in your long term outlook.

We have some pretty serious needs that usually can only be addressed in the 1st round of the NFL draft....QB, CB, and DL.

Our two backs are proven, and are at the top of their game, now is the time to add picks in a very good draft.

That said, if they really believe that Moore is the savior, then keeping the two won't bother me quite as much.

I have seen the Colts i.e. our old GM make great moves when it comes to RB's....Faulk..James...etc... that is be best way to handle RB's in this league.

But, it is easier to manage the RB position when you are a passing team and have the BEST QB in the game.

I think that Stewart and DWill would like to play together for some time to come. That being said I think that we extend DWill, front load the contract with incentive based years at the end, and extend Stewart at the end of DWills contract. Don't be surprised if DWill's contract only gets extended until the end of Stewarts rookie contract. This would make the most sense, as Deangelo is older, and it is arguable that both are just as talented.

If it's true that they would both command Steven Jackson type money then that's insane to extend them both and tie up 80-90+ million on the running back position. I'd say if we are going to extend DWill then we need to do it now, take advantage of the uncapped year and frontload the hell out of his contract so the big money you use on the two RBs doesn't overlap.

It's not just the RBs though, you have to worry about resigning Otah, Kalil, Thomas Davis, Matt Moore, Beason. If push comes to shove I'd rather lose one of the RBs than Beason or Moore (assuming he continues to play well). Also, if we have to lose one of the RBs, I'd rather keep Stewart and trade DWill than the opposite. Should be interesting to see how things play out with all these core players coming toward the end of their rookie contracts over the next few years.
