I created a little spreadsheet to track some random items to see how this 2024 unit stacks up to previous Panthers years. I will try to update this a couple of times during the season for context. Everything is in a "per game" format. Pressures/GM are only from 2018 to current and QB Hits/GM are from 2006 to current.

Sacks/GM

2024: 1.25 (30th all time)

Least All Time: 2024

Most All Time: 2013, 1996 (3.75)

QB Hits/GM(2006-current)

2024: 2.75 (19th all time)

Least All Time: 2024

Most All Time: 2015 (7.44)

Pressures/GM(2018-current)

2024: 3.25 (7th all time)

Least All Time: 2024

Most All Time: 2019 (10.13)

Points Per Game

2024: 32.35

Most All Time: 2024

Total Yards Per Game Allowed

2024: 358.0 (24th All Time)

Most All Time: 2011 (377.62)

2024: 148.75 (30th All Time)

Forced TO's/GM

2024: 1.25 (27th All Time)

Least All Time: 2023 (0.65)

PFR Defensive Simple Rating System(overall defensive metric)

If you have any other things you would liked tracked as far as defensive metrics/stats, let me know and I can add them in successive versions.

That's great.  What other years are scoring badly? Seeing any other across the board 'leaders'?

The way the upcoming draft is shaking out on paper so far, I honestly think we should just bring Dalton back for another year and just draft defense.  We have to have the worst front 7 by far and 0 pass rush.   Upcoming draft is full of pass rushers especially.  Don't reach for a qb out of need and just add some talent to this borderline talentless defense.

    • This is a good take it really is to the point dc needs to let the world see the real byoung b/c right now everyone in the media and tepper has had blinders on when it comes to young.  Its hard to even know where the panthers are at skill player wise with such horrible qb play.  I doubt it but legette may be a probowl wr he just cant throw the ball and catch it.  I am just so sick of every excuse in the book for byoung.  LIstened to a podcast and the guy was going over how many different options byoung had on the int and all of them were ok except for the one where he threw an int.  He said the play could be run by a hs qb and they would typically make a good decision.
    • I certainly have my complaints about Canales but I'm not ready to fire him yet for a couple of reasons. First and foremost, Tepper has made this one of the least appealing jobs in the league. Morgan and Canales are here to begin with in large part because guys higher on the wish list take other jobs. If you fire Canales you're gonna end up replacing him with another third tier candidate who wasn't being seriously considered by other teams with openings. That's just the reality of the situation right now as far as I can tell. Secondly, despite plenty of room for critique, we are 6-6 despite the worst QB play in the league. That's really damn hard to pull off in the modern NFL. Especially when your D isn't dominant. Our D is greatly improved but is still a slightly below average overall defense ranking 18th in yards per game allowed and 20th in points allowed. Going 6-6 with atrocious QB play and slightly below average defensive play is pretty damn impressive. Even more impressive when you also factor in that we're in the red on turnovers differential at -3. When you combine league worst QB play with slightly below average D and negative turnover differential honestly you'd expect to be in play for the #1 overall pick, not 6-6 and having just played a game that a win would have you leading the division. So yeah, even though I'm far from sold I advocate for patience with Canales for the time being. If you ask me if I'm bringing him back next year, I'm a yes barring a catastrophic meltdown down the stretch which admittedly is very much a possibility.
