Would you trade Ickey

Hopefully one day I could, but there’s a 0.0001% chance of that

Stay on topic bro.

He stays or goes eventually. Market price on a LT has the potential to devastate our cap for a very long time. He is not going to take backup money.

1. we sign and gamble while laying out huge $, praying that he improves a part of his game that has always been a weak spot, and pray that he doesn’t disappear.
2. trade for hopefully good return.
3. panthers it up and he walks for nothing.

I’d finish out the season and draft a true early franchise LT who got that dog in him. He’d be starting by game 6 and you start shopping Ickey.

I'm trying to stay on topic, but this topic makes no sense!

You're singling out a player that is part of the strength of our team. Our Oline is literally the biggest strength of this team. Not only do you suggest trading him, but you're asking for a 2nd Rd pick in return!

That's high value for a player. Like obviously he's talented if you want a 2nd Rd pick in return so why not just sign him to a team friendly deal...

Bruh my head hurts from reading this nonsense. Make it make sense!

I don't want to move on from Ekwonu. Finding a left tackle is really hard to do, and it has haunted this franchise for many, many years. That said, he has not played up to his draft slot.

He's been pretty solid this year, but he's definitely not a pro bowl guy.

I think our biggest problem today was that their defensive line players were a lot better than our offensive line players regardless of scheme or play calling. There's very few teams in the NFL where that is the case, but even though the cowboys are not very good this year, they still have a good pass rush, and we put ourselves in a position where we had to throw it. Most teams have not been forced to throw the ball against the cowboys this season.

Icky was a typical Panthers draft pick. We passed on the guy who was already ahead of the game in pass pro but needed to develop run blocking instead of the other eay around. Pass blocking is a lot harder than run blocking. Icky will at best be a solid LT that excels at run blocking but he's never going to be a pro bowl pass blocking LT. We can't afford to pay him like one. It's kind of like the Burns situation again. If he wants top 5 money, you gotta let him walk.

Vic Beasley ruined our 2015 perfect season, a speed rusher annihilated Cam in the SB and a speed rusher ended Cam’s shoulder and career. Can you imagine Bryce with a major shoulder injury?

Ickey sucks at defending speed rushers. His ceiling for improving this is low. It’s always been his biggest knock. You can only scheme up so much help… but then say hello to stunts.

Playoff teams by and large have edge rushers with explosive speed. I don’t want a wash, rinse, repeat of what happened to Cam.

Is the team willing to a drop massive, cap devastating payday in to the lap of a limited LT? It’s always next year will be better with team, they stay put waiting on said player to take the next step, and he almost never does.

I would.

He isn't a dependable LT. He would be a Pro Bowl Guard but he just doesn't have the agility to keep up with some of these Edge Rushers.

You really don't want to pay this guy LT money for a job he is "okay" at. He isn't going to want to move to G because the market isn't as high. We also have 2 really expensives Gs right now. I'm surprised they haven't tried moving Lewis to C, he has played there before, would allow you to move Ekwonu to LG.

could even consider moving him over to the right side after Taylor Moton’s contract runs out

I like the 2nd idea the best.  Sliding him inside would work if we didn't just sign 2 starting guards.

so generally you want to draft offense and buy defense

defensive players are, generally, excluding pass rushers, cheaper to buy and less unpredictable because they are less scheme dependent.

drafting underwood or banks could give you one of the few marquee talents in this class that otherwise doesn’t have much of it and potentially give you an elite LT, and give you more out of Ekwonu at a position his skillset is more suited for. Maybe you cut bait with Lewis after next season, maybe you don’t resign Taylor Moton.

it all sounds good but the issue is that the upcoming free agent crop of offensive players is actually pretty good whilst the defense doesn’t look too good, and then, the defensive front 7 of this draft class is being considered by pundits as the strength of this class

if mason graham really is Osa Odighizuwa or Abdul carter really is Micah parsons, well, those two just wrecked our offense and we could desperately guys like that on our defense.

If this were his second season and we could play around with moving him inside or on the right, I’d be all about it. I actually love the idea, but it’s complicated.

He’s going to want LT money from somewhere. Wouldn’t you? Say he kills it on the right side. Do you pay LT money to a newly converted right tackle? If he hits free agency, there will be someone who will dish him LT money for sure. 100%.

Im not trying to be a Debbie downer or a doubting Thomas, but I know how this team does and the best predictor of future events is past events.

I personally love the guy and loved the pick. I just see a contract coming due that has a high chance of annihilating the progress this team has made, or letting a player walk that could have netted some good assets.

I meant Campbell, not Underwood. Keep seeing articles for that Michigan commit.

I didn't follow Lewis before he joined our team. I had no idea he played Center. If your scenario were tried we'd have a solid interior with Icky, Lewis, and Hunt. Moton at RT, and I'm assuming Brady at LT. That wouldn't be a bad line-up when you think about.

Unfortunately, I don't see Brady sticking around when his contract expires. I think he's going to want to compete for a starting job elsewhere or at minimum serve as a swing lineman on a winning team. Your idea could necessitate finding a solid LT this off-season in the draft or via free agency...and solid LT's don't grow on trees.

    • Um, no, just no. Bills, Chiefs, Chargers, Ravens, Bengals, Texans, Eagles, Commanders are 8 teams that it's not even a debate, they aren't trading their QB for Purdy. Patriots, Broncos, Titans, Giants, Bears, Vikings, Falcons are 7 more teams with QBs drafted in the last 2 years that also would rather stick with them than trade for Purdy as they all have more upside than he does. Lions, Packers, Cowboys, Bucs are 4 more that would likely keep their QB's as well, age aside for Goff, Dak, and Baker. Panthers and Colts are two teams in the same situation, QB's who have both struggled and shown flashes to where the teams probably stick with them because they drafted them, but in a re-draft of all QB's, they probably take Purdy over the guy they currently have. Jags, Cardinals, Dolphins, are 3 more with QB's who probably have a higher upside than Purdy but come with their own question marks, so debatable if they'd take Purdy over who they already have. That leaves Jets, Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Saints, Seahawks, and Rams. Rams would take him over Stafford for the future of course, but not for 2025, and I'd think the Seahawks would take him over Darnold, but honestly not sure if they would take him over Milroe at this moment as they really like his potential and have him for 4 years really cheap. That leaves 5 teams that I see who would absolutely take him over their current situation right now, and a handful of others who MIGHT take him over their current guy, a far cry from your 20.
    • Agreed. Also as soon as they received the top pick in the next draft it was over. Bears won that trade. Gave up a top overall pick got one the next year plus pick 9, a couple 2nds, and DJ Moore a proven young WR. Had their 2024 pick from us be in the late teens or later it would be more debatable IMO.
    • Option A:  Pay your starting QB starting QB money. Option B:  Look for a starting QB for 4-10 years (or longer) while wasting the talent at every other position.    How many of the top 20 QB's do you think are worth what they are being paid?   When you factor in the last year of his present deal his contract is really an average of 45 million per year which in today's QB market is a very, very good deal. I wish we'd had found a Brock Purdy to pay 50+ million a year right after we parted ways with Cam.  Ya'll go ahead and live in fairy tale land where good to great (much less elite) QB's are available to pay. Just the fact that they had the chance to pay Brock after the disaster of trading up for Lance is a testament that when you find a quarter back you can win with, complete in the playoffs and superbowls with, you pay him.
