custom closets - worth the silent treatment?

am i a bad husband for telling my wife, "no, i will not pay $6,000 for someone to customize our closets?"

if i had $6,000 to piss away, it sure wouldn't be on a "custom closet."

do you concur?

In our neighborhood, you will never get a decent return on an investment like that if you sell the house

Ever.

Of course. All of the planners I've ever seen, met, or read about are women. They have all sorts of stuff for ties, jewelry, watches, braziers etc.

let's just say i was at work when this designer came over and showed ginny everything that could be. drawers, shoe racks, built in hampers, tie racks, belt racks, etc. you should have seen the lady's face when they explained what they had planned. she saw sucker written all over my wife's face. i said very calmly, "why do we need wood backing behind the clothes? won't our clothes cover that? and do we really need polished aluminum round coat racks? why are the pulls so expensive?"

when the lady left, i told ginny that it was too expensive. so she removed some of the high end details and two closets from the quote. now we're looking at $1700 for the master closet. which i shot down again. i told her i could custom build an entire closet with high end material for less than that.

i guess that isn't what she wanted to hear.

We priced California Closets, got an estimate. Then decided to go to Ikea, buy their poo and have my guy install them. After looking at it again, the price of the Ikea after installation, wasnt much cheaper than the California Closets.

We went back to Cali Closets and told them, we would do it for $X. They did it. get a few estimates, then bargain with them. I have a feeling they need the business right now. Not sure,, but they definitely bargained with us.

They are nice by the way.

Sounds like you've got a battle on your hands... good luck man. Maybe go with the alternate proposal approach... find something outrageous that you would like to have... say a new 55" flat screen 3D TV that costs about the same as what she wants and start talking that up... see how she likes the idea of spending money on something that you want.

I wouldn't spend 6k on a closet unless I had atleast 4+ million in the gank and even then I'm not sure I'd fork out that much cash for my closet.

I'd use 6k to go to Europe or finish every house project we have left.
