Fantasy Man: Carolina’s DeAngelo Williams

Cold, Hard Football Facts for August 16, 2010

Did you see DeAngelo Williams Thursday night, in Carolina’s 17-12 loss at Baltimore in the first exhibition contest for both teams?

He got only a handful of touches, but the results were sharp and quick and explosive, and a great portent of things to come – once again – for the Panthers running back.

Williams carried the ball five times, but turned those limited carries into 33 yards – an impressive 6.6 average per attempt against a club that consistently fields the toughest run defense in football (Baltimore was No. 1 last year in run defense, allowing 3.43 YPA).

Fantasy fans – those of you inclined to participate in imaginary fake football – should take notice. So should all fans around the NFL. After all, Williams is poised to do things in 2010 that only two of the elite ball carriers in history have ever accomplished. (Fantasy fans should also check out our new league this year, too.)

To be honest i thought he was a bust after his 1st two seasons. Foster was the #1 back and I liked him except for his fumble problems. DWill has exploded the last two years and I see no reason for him to slow down. Having Stewart only helps him stay healthy longer

I agree he is one of the top backs in the NFL, but I don't see him breaking that record this year. I hope he does because I drafted him in my fantasy league, but Stewart has shown major improvement and will get a bunch of carries; especially in the 2nd half once the defense is tired. He will be the Marion Barber from a couple of years ago that gets the majority of the carries in the 4th qtr., when the defense is tired and will crush people.

I hope Stewart doesnt take away his goaline carries, and Dwill still gets about 15-20 carries a game. Fox has a tendenacy to want to throw when we should run. Just look at the Buffalo game last year, and the Arizona playoff game

    • I'm looking at the schedule and I see a 10+win season easy.  I think Carolina goes undefeated in the division.  I also believe that the Bears, Bengals, Lions, Browns, Steelers are very winnable.  Revenge game with phillips and the eagles could be a win.  Honestly only 2 games I see as chalking up a L to off the bat is the Seahawks and Broncos.
    • I guess so. Don't think I was involved with previous discussions.  Tepper is one of the newest owners in the NFL. Dan is going into his 3rd season as a GM - ever. Dave is going into his 3rd season as a HC - ever. Before becoming a HC, he was an OC/playcaller for one season total. Idzik is about to go into his 1st year as a play caller - ever. WRs are rookies, sophomores and 3rd year guys - though the experienced 3rd year guys are XL and Coker (who has missed a ton of games). TEs are guys going into their 2nd and 3rd seasons, and Tommy Tremble - though Sanders has missed a ton of games. QB has played 3 years. Chuba is an experienced RB, but Brooks and Etienne have taken very little snaps at the position. O-line is more experienced vets with some talent - which is HUGE. Need them to stay healthy. I mean the offense is very young in every aspect except O-line. You see it differently?
