Nick Scourton looks like a better player than Stewart. Watch a game and tell me which one looks like the better player. Stewart's hype is driven by physical measureables only. He is not that good of a football player. Could he learn with the right coaching? Possibly. But that risk is too high with pick #8.

Pick #20+ is more reasonable.

They have similar talent with different skillsets to me.

5 is more than Stewart had his entire career. LOL

The thing the vast majority of 1st round busts have in common is that they have all the traits for a pro player.

Stewart just doesn't have traits,  he has shown elite traits. And he backed that up at the combine and the senior bowl. Whether he can put that all together in the pros is the question. But saying he wont because his sack numbers were low is a very careless way to judge.

Is Stewart 6-5 267 or 6-6 290? Different websites have different info

Played close to 290 for A&M and was used more on the interior similar to our DEs. He was tasked primarily with stopping the run. He slimmed down to 267 in preparation for the combine. I like the flexibility he would provide being able to play OLB or rush DE for us.

If he played DE on a 3-4 than the numbers make more sense

I'm not saying he won't. I'm saying that history shows that these guys with poor production in college but stellar workouts tend to also go on to have poor production in the NFL. Yeah, there are exceptions but make no mistake about it, they're exceptions and not the norm. And in Stewart's case, his production isn't just run of the mill "poor" for a 1st round draft pick. His stats scream UDFA. There's just an insane gap between the traits and the production. Not all great athletes are football players.

It was often a 3-3-5 and he was rarely free to pin his ears back from the edge.

I think I only watched two of his games and I honestly didn't notice him. Having watched a couple of his "highlight" reels it's wild how many times he has one on one matchups and beats the blocker but then just runs around like a chicken with his head cut off. Like free path to the QB and doesn't even come close. He looks like an elite athlete who just has absolutely zero football instincts.

Why worry about any of it?

Well, because I want the team that I've been rooting for for 30 years (really 31) to have success and win it all before I pass on. But I get your point; I may not worry, but I do react to carrying degrees. I try to take it all in stride in order to control my blood pressure, but occasionally cursing at the TV and making gestures in an animated manner is benign enough I suppose.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
