Was the wide receiver blocking problem for Panthers

I have a feeling the reason that our running game didn't function Sunday was the WR blocking.

I think Steve Smith is little bit worried about the arm, at one situation that I saw, if he can just block or delay the corner, Steward would have a clear path to the goal line.. Normally Smith is a fierce blocker but on that situation, I had impression that he hesitated for one second.....

And our other WRs doesn't have the Moose blocking ability at the moment....normally WR smust seal the edge but when Williams and Steward try to cutback to outside there was always a non-blocked safety or corner there.....

Not to mention I don't even remember too many runs that were even outside near the wide receivers. I think that's what I was most upset about...how many times have we seen dwill get 5,6,7 yards on those toss sweeps. We never did it once...seemed like everything was up te middle...and that little delay they did about 6 times was effective but you have to change it up. Maybe they were setting it up for the second half but then abandoned the run too early and never got to it. The playcalling to me was the downfall of the running game.

The problem IMO was that whereas last year you would see our OL blow up their DL and have our guards on their LBs by the time the RB reached the line of scrimmage, last week we were getting blown off the line by their DL and LBs were shooting the gaps. Our RBs were hardly ever able to reach the LOS.

I have to admit, aside from the blocking, I don't think I've ever seen DLo go down to so many arm tackles in a game, ever. I really think Bernadeau is questionable as a starter right now, it seems that was where a great deal of the problems were coming from without going back to look at the game.

We missed Hoover. Fee didn't get it done. A good FB blocking would open holes to the LB's.

That's not really true. The giants dline plugged all the gaps before fee could even get there. My worrie is that we practiced pass blocking more then run blocking in the pre season and it has effected us. Or that the giants dline is just that good. One or the other.

Ya, the O-line blocking was the problem, not the WRs. And that was one thing I saw in the game I really liked, the delay plays. They worked well and are the kinds play I've been hoping to see more of since Deangelo started starting.

It's not just Bernadeau but also Shwarts as well. I've not really seen this discussed on here since the game but if you look at the adjustments the Giants made at the half it was to put overload the left side of the Panthers line leaving the right side in one on one coverage. Knowing that Shwarts and Bernadeau couldn't even handle that the Giants D focus on crashing the left side of the line, where our best and most experineced lineman are.

There was one pass play where Shwarts and Bernadeau doubled a lineman while Kalil, Wharton and Gross where left to block 3 d-lineman and 2 blitzing LBers. Needless to say the play resulted in a sack.

I think that having Otah back could help Bernadeau but he is still a liability. Robinson not showing up this offseason really put the line in a bad position and I'm surprised they haven't went out to find a new RG yet. But Kalil and Hangerman both struggled when they first got their starts and after a while, with other experienced lineman around them, they pulled it together. Maybe thats what they are hoping for with the return of Otah.

As for the OP concerning the WR. Not only where they playing the run well, they were running great routs and getting good separation. The problem with the passing game and the running game was on the o-line.

Like someone said Gross isn't playing his best ball either right now. Quite frankly everyone on the O-line is getting dominated at some point or another. I want to say we really miss Otah, but Otah isn't going to help Moore from getting sacked from the blind-side. Maybe we are just out of sync because we didn't run the ball all that much in the preseason, but I hate making random excuses. They all just need to play better and they know that.

Good post man. I didn't actually see what they were doing with overloading the left side, but it makes sense and shows what a liability the guys on the right side are right now. I think Schwartz does pretty good, I really do think it's mostly Bernadeau. Depending on the play, he pulls a lot, and I think that was another problem on power plays and stuff like that is that he wasn't getting out there.

I'm not going to pretend like I can pinpoint it on him b/c I don't have the game film, but my first impression was that he was the 'leak,' so to speak. If him or Schwartz messes up, the other one could be left vulnerable b/c of it, so it could be both of them equally. All I do know is that that was the side where we couldn't establish the edge AT ALL. Either the defensive player shot through the guard/tackle hole or outside the tackle.

After the game, Kalil admitted there were communication problems on the offensive line. Not sure how a group of guys who have been practicing and playing together for this amount of time can have a communication breakdown, but it happened.

Take it from someone who played offensive line at the collegiate level, when communicate breaks down things get ugly, no matter how good the individual talent is on the line.

    • Another layer to that is Ive seen Seattle has been in the market for CB help this off-season.   Michael had a higher PFF grade than Horn who got 15 games this season. He wants to be here too, that's a huge bonus for any 5 win team that had awful pass rush.  The 7th rounder Michael Barrett didn't last long on Seattle, he was cut before the season I think and ended up on browns PS. He's already been on 5.......5 teams within one year.......
    • You have gave the board some recent gold via posting. Heres my poor attempt at the truthful play-by-play of the time during post- I pulled out the old laptop to do my shitposting and check on websites. Open the huddle and see this new thread. Open thread and read CRAs post, {inner thinking, oooOOooo this is my lane and I got this}. Make sure not to scroll even to the 2nd post. 23% of current neurons still firing start up and two names appear- Captain and Josh....... about another 43 seconds past "O GOD" it's July 4th weekend and I got medicine to pick up. (If the laptop didn't give away my aging, the meds should...) I need to split, think long panther careers and the hint-  Ryan Kalil was a late 2nd and Pro bowls(even all-pros too) he's got to be OLman and Mikie Minter is among the all-time Panthers career leaders. Drop my post. Scramble to get keys, wallet, and phone. Check my phone- its 17% battery.....fug I now have to raw dog the pickup line and put the phone on charge.... Flip flops, sweat ringed filled hat, and shades acquired. Get in my pos rav4 and think about not running the A/C. Pull out the drive way and reach the 1st stop light, A/C is wide open. I check my shirt to see if there's any new stains on my house shirt, bush off the Bojangles salt that I see.... Neurons re-fire and focus on the comments CRA made that no one would get this....... Dang IT, that means it isn't Ryan Kalil or Mike Minter! CVS is close, but I know its impossible I get back withing 10 minutes to change my post and my phone is on the charger. {Think you monkey, at one point you were a draft nerd}. Reach the CVS line, by some grace its not 5 cars deep during 5 o'clock traffic hell. Im second in line after the car in front of me both turn in, they have to go back and forth to line up while Im a pro for that geometry. Neurons finally reach peak performance as Ive re-thought draft classes. Think obscure and unknown 7th rounders with long careers. Some Sunday/Monday night member berry fell out of my Melon, Will montgomery during the players intros for washington. I thought he out of the league and was shocked to see him still playing around the 2015 years. I do a goggle background check and that refreshed memory. Pick up the meds and enjoy the sweet smelling cool CVS air. Driving back and check in on one of the local bums at the big stop light, wow he's got a new fancy rug. Think about all the old food I got and need to start giving it away and rethink it. Reach home and post a follow up and I know Minter is wrong too, I check the draft history and see Robert Mcclain. Too late, but that would have been my guess....open CRAs link and get "upset" at the DBs name.
    • THANKS my guy! Keeping up with this threads theme, if I view a thread and there's only 20 posts and some time passes. If I see there's one new post and read the name; @Dave Gettleman's Shortsis among the chosen few that I will reopen that thread just to see what you posted.    Thanks again, plus not just a scout, thats scotty mccloughans son?!?!? If not for the deep claws of booze, scotty is among the best talent finders this league has recently had. Last I heard he ran a consulting business. Caden could be one of those who's on a early path to being a GM in the future. I was a big fan of his dad, dam shame about booze demon ruining his career.
