Hypothetically speaking: If we had the tools on offense

Would J. Fox still be a bad coach if we had the tools and years of experience on offense. Imagine 2 years down the road regardless who we have as coach, Clausen with 3 years of experience, A.J. Green with 2, LaFell with 3, Gettis with 3, Kyle Rudolph with 2(traded to get a second rounder for him) and our elite rookie Defensive Tackle? It would be pretty hard for any coach, let alone Fox that thrives with veterans, not to have great seasons.

If Fox was here we would go into the season as clear SB favorites and finish 8-8

then, come in the next year with a so called sub-par group of rag tag NFL players and go 12-4

then, we would trade for the greatest RB / WR in the leage that offseason, bench some of the rag tag NFL players just to go 7-9

etc

Just in case you've missed the John Fox trend the last 9 years

2008 proved that foxball, when the proper tools are implemented, works, and it works well.

the problem, as it always has been, is consistency. foxball doesn't work unless things go exactly as planned - there's no room for error, no room for adjustments. in a game that can change on one play, any play, you have to be able to adjust accordingly, and that's something fox has never seemed to be able to do.

This offense does have the tools to succeed, IMO. Fox does need to adjust a little bit though. Mainly, he needs to step in and force Davidson to start calling some of these short passes that I know are in the play book. You have to help your young QB and WR's out a little bit, if you expect them to have some success and gain some confidence.

When are people going to learn that Fox, Hurney, and Richardson are the only anamolies left to explain why our ouffense is the way it is. Why it never changes or adapts. The latter 2, I'd guess would have less than 1% effect ultimately on the play caller.

People called for Henning's head and He was released. Our offense was too predictable, unimaginative and not an NFL level offense. We hire Davidson to come in and be our OC. Yet, we are calling for the same thing 3 years after his arrival. Fox is the PROBLEM. Its not OC's. He is hamstringing the play calling. If you dont understand that he is the only factor in the play calling, then your the biggest Fox Homer on this board.

even with the right tools to run his ideal offense.....which he runs even if the pieces don't fit. He is still poor at gameplanning opponents, poor at in game adjustments, poor at managing timeouts, poor at managing his talent, etc.

In today's NFL Fox likes to lineup, let his oppoenent know what is coming......and dares them to stop him. That ain't smart football at this level in a parity driven league.

it is Fox's offense. Not Davidson.

a run, play action based offense isn't about short passes. When you can't hit the deep passes in Fox's scheme it makes running near impossible. Short safe throws ain't gonna solve anything. The D's are prepared for the short game offensive attacks when you can't do the rest.

Really? I have never seen Fox standing on the sidelines with a play sheet like all the coaches who call their own offenses. He may tell Davidson to emphasize the run more, but he does not call the plays and Davidson is not running Fox's scheme.

And short passes would most definitely help JC and those young WR's. Those are certainly easier to execute than running play action passes with slow developing routes before you have even established the run...that's for damn sure.

Regarding the long versus short passing debate, it isn't one versus the other it is both done at the right time. To give Clausen some confidence for example I would open with a few short passes. Try a smoke route to Smitty for example unless the corner is right on top of him then I might open with a deep sideline route. It will open up the smoke route the next time. If there are 8 or 9 in the box I would throw a deep route to chase them out of the box. I would throw a seam route or 2 to the tight end to back off the MLB.

I would throw on 1st or 2nd down to loosen them up instead of always running on first and second and throwing on third down. I would put Smitty in motion and in the slot, put him on the left then the right side on successive plays to see how the defense handles it.

Bu then again I would be trying things in the first half so I could figure out how to adjust and be different in the money half.

So I guess I couldn't work for the Panthers even if I was qualified. Seems I would do all the wrong things according to them. :D

yeah, he has his employee doing what he wants. Davidson has to run his version of Fox's offense and Fox makes sure of that.

legit weapons on offense are wasted on us right now.

why does it seem like the staff and FO are the only ones aware of this?

Jake Delhomme and Matt Moore might argue that QB is the not only problem with the offense.

Stop saying "Fox's offense". Fox is a defensive coach who does not design offenses.

      Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.

      Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
