Derek Landri the real deal?

he's my DT in my all defensive league and i've been really happy with him. he's very consistent.

every game except for the first he has gotten at least one TFL so he's getting in the backfield and causing some problems.

we may have a keeper. i hope he keeps it up. we still need a big ol' fatty NT to work along beside him though.

For comparison purposes we are not leading the league in number of defensive plays surrrendered but we are third at 344. Washington leads the list at 362. By comparison the 20th ranked team is at 295. So the general average seems around 300 or 60 plays a game. The lowest ones like Tampa have already had their bye. So in comparison we are right at 69 plays a game.

In rushing attempts we are second at 35 attempts a game, the average is around 27.

So does Landri benefit from more plays? To some extent sure, his 20 tackles is 4th in the list for tackles. But interestingly the next highest Panther D linemen is Johnson tied for 29th on the list at 15 tackles. I don't remember when the last tine a DT lead our line in tackles.

Which Johnson?

Have to give Hayden and Landri their due, both have exceeded my expectations. We still need to upgrade that position, but they've done well.

Look around the league man. A LB almost ALWAYS leads a team in tackles. That's not a reason for concern. Concern comes when a DB is leading your team in tackles.

All things in good measure. Yes, linebackers most always lead the team in tackles but the disparity is not very often as well defined with teams with good line play. However, good teams usually do not have 3 linebackers in the Top 18 tacklers in the league. If your DBs are leading your team in tackles, like Washington, your defense is beyond help.

Since our interior DL is kinda suspect and we should probably spend our 1st round pick on a DT, why not go with the Giants' way of 3 DE's and one DT. Play Johnson, Brayton, Brown/Hardy and Landri? Speed, pash rush and Brayton is big enough to stop the run on the inside. Plus Beason can slide down in the box and come off the edge to add more pass rush ability on passing downs.

That only works when you're relatively sure that teams are going to pass.

If we just lined up four DE they'd get run all over, especially by the end of the game when they're completely gassed.

I don't know if I would start Hardy or not as a rule but might start him situationally depending on the opponent. Against New Orleans who passes almost exclusively it would make sense but against a team that run s alot he might still be a liability. Plus I would want to see how he holds up endurance wise. Many rookies aren't used to the extra games in the NFL and hit a wall around game 10 if they play all the time. Plus I would have to determine if it is better to have him fresh rushing the passer on third downs, or getting gassed and less effective if he is in every down.

    • I would write “give remmers tight end help” on a yellow sticky note and stuck it in shulas playbook the night before superbowl 50.
    • And don’t worry about Bryce he will be great… Peyton Manning had a horrible rookie year too 😂
    • Nothing wrong with it at all until you start telling others they are bad fans or not fans. But you are the good fan because you never say negative stuff about the team.    I did many years of that type of uninformed fanning because there really was no info and coverage like there is with the internet.    I mean, I used to go to the store and get Street and Smith’s annual football issue. That was about the extent of what you could get if you didn’t live in a big city with sportswriters covering and reporting.  There was no video to look at or replay the games and if you didn’t live in the market you could only rarely see your football team play.    TI have fanned since being a kid in the early 1960s, and as late as 1995 - ‘97 I lived in Atlanta and good luck getting more than 3 or 4 games a year on TV. No radio either. No print coverage outside of an AP recap and box unless they played Atlanta.  People today that have always had the network connection don’t know.    I wasn’t very educated about the Panthers until I finally got internet.
