Cam Newton is a superior version of Josh Freeman

Pantherfan 52 hit the nail on the head. Newton ran the spread offense with little to no reading. According to scouts, he has rather disturbing mechanical issues with his delivery. Physically, he is a specimen, but his experience and cognitive abilities are not impressive. I think he has a severe ego and character concerns. Most draft analysists say that he will go in the top 10, but he shouldn't. Sounds like a bust in the making. Fool's gold. I would be very leary of going QB if Luck does not come out.

After last night's game, I see that Locker is not the answer. Mallett is the same as Newton in a lot of ways, but he is more erratic throwing the ball.

Newton is a huge gamble, one this franchise cannot afford to take right now. Luck is too, but he has many qualities that make him a better prospect. I will be surprised if Luck isn't a great QB, surprised if Newton becomes an average one.

Freeman 6'6 248. Ran alot at KState. More so than Culpepper who is equallly big.

Freeman has Tampa team on the verge of 10 wins. 23 td's and only 6 ints.

Cam, get real close to your speakers, IS FAR AND AWAY HANDS DOWN BETTER THAN FREEMAN!!!

Shut your mouth and stop whining about black qb good or bad.

As someone pointed out in the Exhibit A thread about running qb's being injury prone, Exhibit C is Matt Stafford. The Lions brought out Shaun Hill and for God's sake they even let Drew Stanton play 6 games. Drew Stanton.

I'm telling you the Panther's have house money IF, Luck OR Newton go pro.

We went 12-4 with Jake, just sayin...

Josh Freeman is good because of what's between his ears. Where that's concerned, the jury's still out on Newton. As a freshman, Freeman was impressing the hell out of Raheem Morris with his maturity and leadership. As a freshman, Newton was being accused of stealing a laptop and transferring out of Florida.

If he declares, I would wait until the interviews and wonderlic before suggesting that he'll be as good or better than Freeman.

Freeman was more of a passer than a runner in college, had better mechanics, better accuracy, had to make reads... The only reason he didn't get the recognition that Cam did was because he played at lowly K-State team which didn't give him much help.

Here is Josh Freeman's three years a K-State

Compared to Cam's 1 year at Auburn.

Cam had more Rush attempts this year than Freeman had in all three years combined... Freeman was a passer, and his stats compare pretty good with Matt Ryans... Just saying.

The mentality is definitely something I am worried about with Newton. Like I said in an earlier thread, he has always been bigger, stronger, and faster than his competition. How will he adjust when he can't do whatever he wants outside the pocket?

exactly, how will he react when he cant run 22 TD's in and he has to find open guys, that is what determines if he will be good or not.. Josh Freeman has it, most don't.

some of you are hanging your hat on TOO many variables. I mean, Clausen could have been in a plane crash on the way to the draft.

Peppers could have gotten amnesia while out at Ray's Pizza in NYC the night before the draft.

Geez.

Of course college is dif than NFL. Nice work Chris Mortenson.

For any player, we won't know until they step on the field. Look at the Pro Bowlers out there that were late round picks or you never even heard of and made it happen?

Newton, while playing a spread, also had alot of comebacks in the BEST conf in America. That also speaks to his ability.

All I'm saying is, he doesn't have the question marks in my eyes that warrant avoiding him.

Not right now he's not, he's still really raw. You can say he has more upside I guess but that's not exactly concrete. Freeman was terrible as a rookie but has improved drastically since he came into the NFL. Newton will probably have to take a similar path, he's not ready to step in and play today. Biggest question would be do you think he has the worth ethic and character to develop into a franchise QB.

All I'm saying is, he doesn't have the question marks in my eyes that warrant avoiding him.

1. Pro Bowlers who were late round picks are different from first round picks. Late round picks are gambles and you hit on a few. That is what we did with Gettis and Hardy. First round picks should make the pro bowl for the most part. If you miss, they cripple your franchise.

2. I recently heard the same argument about success in the SEC about Jamarcus Russell, Matt Stafford, Brodie Croyle, even Chris Leak. If Newton was that good, why was Auburn coming from behind? Because the coaches had to make the adjustments for the most part.

3. Newton is an awesome athlete that reminds me of a new and improved Vince Young. However, the baggage he carries suggests some severe character concerns. Aside from the stolen computer, you could say that he didn't have any knowledge of his father's doings. Assuming that is true, who do you think Cam's role model was? Who developed his value system?

4. Cam Newton will, at best, have an up and down career. His ego and character don't suggest that he will have a Manning or Luck type work ethic. He lacks their intelligence (Football IQ) and you can see that on film. He is fool's gold. While Luck will be a good NFL QB, Newton could be a good NFL QB. That is a huge difference and reason not to take him with the first pick, even if Luck stays in school.

I see your points, just don't agree with them. I also realize that neither of us knows for sure. Newton has a chance to be great, and Luck could be a bust. However, if they were thoroughbreds lining up for the Kentucky Derby, Luck would have tremendous odds to win and Newton's odds would be much higher.

I'd rather have Newton than Clausen anyday of the week but he's not worth the #1 or even a top 10 pick to me, we dont have a coach that's good enough to develop him. We all know JR's not drafting some black quarterback from the south lets get realistic here, right KT?
