Beason comments on Peppers

Here is what he had to say about Peppers on his website

"Our big issue for the off-season is whether J.P. will be moving on to another team. There is no replacing Julius Peppers, they just don’t make ’em like that. He always drew the attention of the offense so they would leave me alone back there. If he goes, he’ll always be remembered as Julius Peppers, “The Freak.” But I’m happy for him if he decides to leave, if that’s what he thinks is best for him. It’s hard to go out and play and give it your all if you don’t want to be where you are. That’s why contracts only go so long, players should have a right to be free agents and choose where they want to play.

I think Julius loves it here, but maybe for him it’s just time to move on."

But as he said, Peppers took a lot of attention away from him. It might be harder without Julius for Beason to excel as well as he did this year...

I'm actually really worried about that...Beason is not the biggest LB in the world. We are really gonna need to get a solid DE in there not just to pass rush but also to stop the run and take up blockers. Like he said, "they don't make em like Pep" but we are going to need someone other than CJ and Brayton if we want any chance of succeeding on defense.

are you guys forgetting how many times peppers was contained by just one person, many times a rookie or a 2nd or 3rd stringer?

him being gone would hurt more if peppers was consistently applying pressure and getting doubled up.

since that wasn't the case beason will be fine.

Obviously Peppers did enough that Beason is worried about his own performance without Peppers

I know they chipped Peppers, and such... but wasn't it when the middle of the line went down that Beason kinda became a non factor?

Peppers wasn't doubled all season, as a matter of fact he wasn't doubled that much at all this season. but Beason still made plays.

I'm not say'n Peppers isn't a factor on this team, but I think the "attention" Peppers got wasn't as much as it's played up to be.

but that might just be me.

i don't think he is really all that worried nor should he be.

if peppers gave it everything he's got every game all game, then yeah...but teams didn't exactly double or triple peppers up all the time.

beason doesn't want pep to leave, i have no doubt of that but i don't think that we are going to notice a lot of difference in beason's coverage. if he can get someone who is constantly applying pressure throughout the game we may see an improvement.

Kemo was more important to keeping blockers off Beason than Peppers.

Is it just me, or does anyone else get a slight "damn with faint praise" feel out of the second half of that paragraph?

sensed it as well. i don't really think the players are happy about it. i'm sure they are pissed at him. they just can't really say anything.

    • Cam was hitting his stride as a QB in 2017/2018.     This is why I think stats like completion percentage are overrated. As long as a QB is clutch and makes the throws to win the game the rest doesn’t really matter. What good is a check down stat padder if they’re a choker.  Until Norv Turner (and briefly Chud) got here we put Cam in high pressure throwing situations all the time. We also ran the ball on first down more than most teams in the NFL in the Ron era. Coupled with shitty WRs, all that is expressed in his stats. I also assume Cam took the ball in his hands on many occasions rather than trust Funchess to catch the ball.    It was also never Cams job to play the game like someone else. His presence on the field dictated the game in a way that is rarely seen.  He showed he could play the dink and dunk game just before TJ Watt. That didn’t suddenly make him better than his earlier seasons. He just got put in a legit under center  passing game again for first time since his rookie year with Chud.    Ron took the quickest path to success and abused the RPO because his ass was about to get fired.    Cam never got the credit for being the cerebral player that he was. I just think when you are legitimately a human Superman, sometimes the best play is having the ball in your hands. He was a better passer than Delhomme was.
    • I don't think Canales has any problem benching Bryce or moving on if Bryce doesn't come out playing like the end of last year.  It's year 3 no more excuses for Bryce
    • Yea Bryce was definitely a top half qb the second half of last season but I'm not sure Canales is 100% sold on him.  Like I've said in another post I think that's part of why we talked to so many South Carolina players in the draft process.  I think they are doing early due diligence on Sellers just in case.
