The Story of 2010: Civil War

Like ones that left with him?

They can be replaced and it's not like he has a coaching tree

They can, but I'd have preferred to keep Baker, Smith, Chryst, Rodgers, maybe Skipper and Magazu.

Baker, in particular, is a guy I think might just be something someday.

actually, from the way it sounded in he press conference fox had control over personnel choices. they implied (or directly said) that coaches had been given reign to do what they wanted and the FO was taking back the reigns.

i'm thinking that jake was given the extension not because JR or marty wanted it to happen, but because he was fox's QB and that is what fox wanted to happen. after last season it was obvious that jake was done, but it was also obvious that fox wasn't going to bench his QB so they got rid of him.

Fox never did contracts. He may have been able to say "I want this guy" but he didn't negotiate or work the cap.

I imagine a lot of this stemmed from Fox's refusal to pull Jake when he was throwing interceptions at a record pace. Then Jake gets injured, Moore comes in and plays relatively well (when he has a pair of veteran wide receivers and a healthy offensive line). JR says to himself, see we can win with the young guys and dumps most of the veterans. Fox realizes he is a lameduck with no control over personnel. The players know this as well and we end up with this travesty of a season.

I will say this, JR was certainly honest today. Can't fault him for that.

I think Richardson said it clearly when he commented that in the past they asked the head coaches what they wanted and this time they are going to focus on what they need from the coach. In other words they aren't interested in a guy who wants control to do it their own way. They want someone who will be more of a yes man and do it the front office's way without asking questions or arguing.

So guys like Harbaugh, Gruden, Cowher and anyone else who wants to do it their own way won't be considered. This can be a good philosophy as long as the FO really knows what they doing. Most successful organizations employ that strategy. But when you go 2-14, and they admitted they were wrong about how good or bad we would be, you would think they wouldn't be so cocky.

Fox has his good and bad traits. His defenses always played hard. He has his players back, but lets be real, this is a QB driven league now, and if you can't develop a QB, more than likely, you can't win. Fox's offensive coaching staff (outside of Jim Skipper and possibly the Oline coach) was garbage. those were HIS guys.

I can imagine hed adjust with his new job, unless of course he ends up in Cleveland, and then he can rid Delhomme for a few more years (actually McCoy is the guy there now...Holmgren will see to that)

I'd heard and read more than once that JR and Fox had not spoken since the infamous meeting at Lake Norman after the 2008 season, so this really comes as no real shocking revelation.

if i recall correctly, that was prior to the 2008 season, not following it. sparked fox and hurney to inflate the offensive line and take risks in the draft to get a solid running game going. it was the kick in the ass that got them to 12-4.

i think it was more they just let the HC do his own thing and coach his own way, even if that meant sticking to a philosophy and players that weren't getting the job done and wasn't making the team stronger down the road. they just want the coach to be more held accountable for what they do and not feel that they can do whatever they want and the FO just has faith in them getting the job done.

it's their own fault that they let foxball go on for too long with his old vets. they just aren't going to let that happen. they want a team that stays competitive and is able to make adjustments and play some exciting football and they want a coach that can do it and they will do more to make sure that he stays that way.

What I keep thinking about is JR saying he wanted Fox to give younger guys a chance and not just stick with vets. Well, this is the kind of season you get when you strip the vets from a guy that leans on them heavily. Whether or not you liked Fox's style you have to admit that it works for the most part. JR didn't like the meals Fox was preparing and instead of getting rid of him took away his shopping privileges and gave him all the wrong groceries.

Something which I would expect anyone with a big ego to take as a slap in the face.

    • if  ANYONE actually goes & looks at the FACTS on rookie Qb's after 2 full seasons as a starter in the NFL & they are still well below average do they rarely ever actually become top tier Qb's & instead most likely either do not recieve a second contract & or become life long backups...just saying
    • So he became GM and decided not to address the weakness in the QB room following one of the worst rookie QB performances in NFL history?  There were options last season other than signing Dalton to a 2 year deal. Brissett and Jones by a wide margin, both of whom outplayed Bryce, Wilson, Winston, hell even Rivers off the couch was more exciting at the QB position. The time to address the failure in the QB room was last year but instead people on the Huddle cheered when we brought Dalton back then cheered when we were able to get anything for him after they finally realized he was washed up like a few of had been saying all along and got poo'd for even mentioning.  This year, the options were more limited obviously, especially since we lost Icky. It changed the dynamic of our draft. I think we were stuck this year keeping Bryce, but i still think giving him a 5th year option for what has amounted to replacement worthy performance was the wrong move. Why guarantee 25m if you're planning to replace him? You think he's going to want to be a bridge QB? Hell no. He's going to want out and we'll end up cutting him if he has another lackluster season because no one is trading for him with that price tag.  Were there better options as far as production available. A couple. Were there guys available with more physical tools than Bryce, Pickett or Grier, you damn well better believe there were. I've been saying all along, you always keep looking for your 1b. Bryce has yet to prove he can be a starter. Keep looking for someone who may. Put competition in camp. Let the best QB lead the team. Stop settling for less than mediocre.
