Sign Asomugha Petition

You do realize we were prepared to pay Peppers one season probably the same amount this guy would command, however this guy is/has been way more dominant than Peppers. Not to mention, it's the Raiders, and he was on the field, a lot. I fail to see how signing someone like this would be a bad idea, especially since we're up in the air about Gamble and Marshall, it seems like. I'm sure we'll pass, obviously, but if JR wants to prove that he's out to win (after CBA gets worked out, if it does, of course, pffft) this would be a good step in the right direction.

But how about them raiders, they kind of seem smart for putting these incentives in, they paid him good for his prime years and now he's almost 30 they are letting him go?

Then again, many corners continue to be elite well into their 30's, honestly.

Regarding Peppers, generally speaking DE's are more highly valued than cornerbacks.

It would be nice to have the guy, but we need to sign free agents where we need them the most. Defensive Tackle and QB are the biggest needs. Don't know who they plan on signing at DT, or if they plan on signing a veteran QB, but those two needs should be looked at before even discussing cornerback.

You know why they are valued more? Because you can count on ONE hand the shut down corners of the last decade or longer. There are very, very few cornerbacks of the caliber of Asomugha, they just don't come along all the time. Can you do that with DE's? Peppers, Freeney,Strahan, etc etc, even Charles Johnson on our team, that no one knows about outside of Charlotte, had a good year.

I think this is a situation of people looking at his stats and not seeing 10 interceptions a year on there and thinking he's not worth it.

Obviously we won't sign anyone that matters in FA, but to say we shouldn't look at this guy, is crazy.

Ok, so a lot of you in this thread would not want to sign Nnamdi due to the fact of how much he is gonna ask for (which is understandable). But JR set us up to have enough money to sign contracts of such. Nnamdi's stats this year are not comparable to previous years, it just shows that OC's and QB's tend to look off his side because he did what he is classified (shutdown corner) and shut down the receiver across from him. He doesn't have flashy stats and he isn't out there like Revis, but with him on the field it would shut down that side of the field for opposing teams. We'd have Gamble opposite him who isn't a bad corner himself and could be elite covering no. 2 wideouts. Munnerlyn as the nickel (because obviously Marshall is on the way out) could cover a slot receiver and possibly some no. 2. The only negative with Munnerlyn is his height, could he cover TE's?

Now onto the contract issue. Nnamdi is going to be asking for top corner money (deservingly so) and most of you are against the idea of "overpaying" him. But let's say for instance another possible FA isn't resigned before hitting the market (Haloti Ngata) would any of you be willing to pay whatever is necessary (even if it means he will be the highest paid defensive player in the league) to get him. I for one would not want to pay Ngata that kind of money...He doesn't seem like the type of player who performs well to get paid and then doesn't show up. examples: Julius Peppers and Albert Haynesworth.

I just don't get it. Everyone justifies JR's cheapness because we'll have money when it counts. But when a big FA comes along that could be a huge game changer for us, everyone says "too much money, no way," or, "JR won't pay that for a player." Well, we're going to continue to be a mediocre sports team until our fans demand some kind of things. I'm not talking about buying every FA that comes out, but a guy like this, you can't just pass over.

I've never seen Ngata taking plays off, and that's even more notable for a DT. Like I said in another thread, I'd be willing to throw almost-Haynesworth type money at him. Even if he's the only big name FA we could sign as a result, as long as we get some cheap young guys to fill the other FA-able spots like o-line and DT depth

same thing with Nnamdi (IF Marshall isn't resigned) but if I had my choice between the two, I'm taking Ngata.
