Is Dave Wannstedt next?

If you just watched the news conference that introduced Ron Rivera as our head coach then you probably remember Ron mentioning his name, well ESPN is already speculating that he will be back in the NFL this season and could be coming to Carolina.

One head coaching hire in Carolina has created multiple opportunities for former University of Pittsburgh head coach Dave Wannstedt, according to league sources.

Within the next 24 hours, Wannstedt is expected to talk to his former Dallas Cowboys counterpart and current San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner about succeeding former San Diego defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who agreed Tuesday to become the Carolina Panthers head coach.

But Rivera also is interested in talking with Wannstedt, who wants to become an assistant head coach. Rivera needs a defensive coordinator and Wannstedt is a candidate for the job.

The Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills also have expressed interest in Wannstedt for various coaching roles.

Pittsburgh recently fired Wannstedt, who now appears ready to return to the NFL, where he was a Super-Bowl winning coordinator with the Cowboys and a head coach for the Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins.

Chris Mortensen is ESPN's Senior NFL Analyst. Adam Schefter is ESPN's NFL Insider.

So it looks like San Diego and Carolina are going to be at the top of his list.

If I were wannstedt, I'd go to san diego. Sounds like he'd be able to run the D over there vs. being a yes man to Rivera here

what exactly do you think being a yes man looks like?

I'm very interested to see an explanation on EXACTLY how being a DC in SD will be different then here...

let's nip this in the bud, right about now..

rivera would be running the defense here. DC would be a helper.

the job in DC would be different because he would have a lot more autonomy as the HC doesn't run the defense.

Rivera is going to have a lot more on his plate than just D here. I see your point but I dont think that is the case.

Well I would think in SD he could run the defense by himself here on the other hand Rivera will be very hands on.

and when I generally think yes man I think a younger guy willing to be molded and take notes from Rivera.

Wannstedt (as the Bears HC) gave Rivera his first job in coaching. I don't think "yes man" accurately decribes how that realtionship would work here. They are more likely to agree on the basics because of a belief in similar principles. As an aside, a crusty old DC can be very succesful in this league.

What Rayzor said...consider the bud nipped

This was more along the lines of what the relationship would be.. pretty much nailed it on the head. Just because Rivera is going to oversee the defense doesn't mean Wannstedt is the next Mike McCoy..

Wannstedt has a ton of football knowledge, and I would expect Wannstedt will give his input just as much as you all think Rivera will be "hands on"...

At the end of the day, the only real difference will be Rivera has the final say.. but that's hardly a case to bring up "yes man" status (or as some term, "puppet").. it's not eeeeeeeeeeven close..

    • It’s one thing if we’re converting the salaries of a Turk Wharton or Tommy Tremble.  This is Derrick Brown.  He’ll end up with a whole new contract in a couple years anyway.  And he’ll earn it too.
    • My general thoughts on the roster as it stands right now:  - Most interesting positions to watch: TE, NT, WR.  - If we add a TE I feel like it'll be a bigger name FA or Kenyon Sadiq in the 1st round. I don't expect us to take a TE that early with our need at tackle, though, so it's likely one of the top FA TEs or we ride with Tremble/Sanders/Evans again. Signing a mid-level FA or drafting another mid-round TE isn't going to help us at this point. We have three of those guys already.  - I don't buy the 1st/2nd round WR hype. I do think we will sign someone to play the slot because XL is... not good. John Metchie, Juan Jennings and Calvin Austin would make sense if the money does.  - NT could be interesting because I don't get the sense that they view Bobby Brown as a true starter. This could be a position we look to add a veteran starter at or possibly take one early in the draft.  - Devin Lloyd was a huge addition, but we need another starter beside him. I fully expect us to go after one in the 2nd round. Jacob Rodriguez makes a ton of sense here.  - The Luke Fortner signing gives us a veteran fallback at center this season. I don't expect he'll end up being our long-term starter, but it's likely he will at least begin the year atop the depth chart. Even if we draft a center it's unlikely that player ends up being a day-one starter. But I think right now we're likely targeting a center in the 3rd-4th round as that seems to be where the value is.  - We have no punter on the roster. Interested to see if we sign a veteran or go the draft/UDFA route.  - The OT situation is pretty bleak. I now fully expect us to take a tackle at #19, but even after the Stone Forsythe signing we also need better depth there. Brady Christensen would be an idea re-signing; I also like Jamaree Salyer from the Chargers as a younger option that still has room to develop.  - Guard depth is also lacking. Again, having a versatile backup like Brady Christensen would go a long way toward having some security for our entire OL, but even if he comes back we should add another veteran backup, IMO.  - I assume Lathan Ransom would be the starting FS if we played today, but we know Evero loves him some Nick Scott so I won't be surprised if/when we re-sign him. He's basically the defensive version of David Moore, unfortunately. Ideally we'd look to add a true FS, but I don't get the sense that is a big priority at the moment.  - Nickel corner is a need and I fully expect us to sign someone in the next few days to upgrade over Chau Smith-Wade. Long-term, I won't be shocked if we go CB earlier in the draft than people might expect given Mike Jackson's contract expires after this year.  - I wouldn't be shocked to see us sign a RB. Sean Tucker or Brian Robinson could be interesting. We know what Chuba can do, but Jonathon Brooks has to be considered a question mark at this point.
    • Considering the Raiders and Crosby’s disagreements about his health late last year and the Ravens’ history of being an extremely well run organization I lean towards the Ravens not being in the wrong here
