Word of caution about drafting Fairley

Yeah Baschski is right, yes the offense was worse but DT is probably the biggest need on this team right now. There is no telling when we would have a chance to draft a dominate DT like Fairley again. He's a monster and has all the tools you need to be successful. He has that mean attitude that players will fear and looks like he could be a guy that gets everyone around him more excited to play. Take Fairley, goodness.

just for discussion sake.. what would be your solution on offense?

Otah will be back and healthy, arguably the best RT in the game, that makes a HUGE difference. Give Clausen one more year, LaFell and Gettis will be much improved and hopefully some of the attention will be taken of Smith next year. Resign D-Will and the dominate running game is back. Just get it to where Clausen can be a game manager, keep him active with swing passes and screens which gives him confidence, that sets up for the playaction pass down the field. I mean losing Otah was a HUGE loss, it basically took away running to the right. Just manageable play by Clausen and that team will go 8-8 if we draft Fairley. Like I've said before with Fairley our D would become stout under Rivera, we would just be lacking a true #2 corner which we might can find with a 4th round pick. So basically the answer to your question: give Clausen another year behind a healthy line, he'll be much improved. Fairley would come close to basically completing the defense.

I agree about having caution about the guy. Out of the three top players (Green, Fairley,Peterson) Fairley has the most reasons to use caution. This is why I want us to draft Green with the first pick.

By the way I am in no way saying Fairley sucks or will be a bust. I think the kid is great and I would love to see him on our team, its just the fact he has some questionable problems that make me wonder if he can live up to being a #1 pick.

I agree with that, if either of the two were to bust it would be Fairley but I think both will be great NFL players. I could see when a DT signs that huge contract he just decides to get lazy...I don't think Fairley is like that though. I think he truly loves the game and will live in offenses backfield's for years to come.

Work ethic is usually a real good indication on determining if a player will be succesful in the NFL, Green is said to have that. I remember watching NFL films about Jerry Rice and it talked about how tough his offseason workouts were, they said WRs were complaining they didn't want to train with him because it was too tough. That is the kind of player I want with a #1 pick, not a good but a great player that dedicates him self to being great.

I haven't heard good or bad on Fairleys work Ethic. I think he is in good shape considering how big he is and not ever having any major injuries which is great comparing him to other recently DTs that were drafted in the first.

LSU's Glenn Dorsey had horrible injuries and played through them. Probably one reason why he hasn't been the player he was in college.

DT without a doubt but if I get to pick anyone at one right now it would be Peterson. I say rebuild with a strong CB in the first year cause he want commanded much money and there are better options for DT in FA. Any FA CB will be looking to bank this year. Rather spend money on a experienced DT and a Rookie CB2 then an experienced CB2 and a Rookie DT.

Peterson is a shutdown CB, has great return skills, and has an NFL pedigree (being related to Bryant McFadden, Walter McFadden, Sinorice Moss and Santana Moss (his maternal cousins)), and would be a great choice at #1, IMO

  • 7 months later...

came across this from trucpfan's sig...

looks like we addressed DT in the 3rd like I suggested.. Irving, Fua, and McClain are showing tremendous promise.. keep an eye on Andre Neblett too..

glad we avoided a DT with our 1st overall pick..

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
