How about our scouts?

I think we talk alot about Hurney and the coaches but in reality alot depends on the scouts when we are discussing the draft.Sorry for my ignorance but who are our scouts and are they good.I have alot of questions after last years drafting debacle.I hope it is not the same crew from last year.

As far as I know, the scouting department has had very little, if any, turnover from the past couple years.

However, I think its important to remember that, for the most part, they have done a very good job at finding talent in the draft. Most of our questionable selctions in the past few years have been criticized more where we took them or what we gave up to get them (Hurney's job) than it has been the overall talent/ability of the player taken. (Scouting department)

If there is one are of concern, regarding our scouts IMO, it would be their acumen at evaluating veteran talent. The past few years have seen quite a few FA aquisitions who have had little to no impact for our team. Could that have been a product of our previous coaching staff or injuries? Who knows. But, I do believe that we could benefit from a few more veteran presences to supplant our youth movement. So hopefully our scouts will fare better in that area this offseason than they have in years past.

If I recall correctly, right after this draft this past offseason our main scout (only scout? I dunno how the scout squad really works either) got fired.

I did a little looking, and you are right. We let go of Pete Russell about a month after last year's draft. Seems there was a little contraversy over this. (Agism supposedly)

However, I believe, that most teams have different scouts assigned to different areas of the country. The article I found on Russell's departure seemed to support this as they listed 3 other scouts that had received extensions through this years draft.

Don Gregory is a God, our drafts have been immensely better since replaces Softli.

this. gregory is great. drafts have been a lot more solid overall since he came in.

oh..and russell wasn't fired and there was no agism. that was something that florio pulled out of his bunghole.

his contract ran out. nothing more to it than that. there were also older people on the staff so the whole "fired becasue of his age" thing was a steaming pile of bile.

    • It’ll be interesting to see how the board falls I completely agree with you on TE for us The safety from Oregon would be the cherry on top for Evero’s defense/scheme.  If a OL’men is there that you love it would be very hard to pass up. This fan base seems to just see Walker as a stop gap but I wouldn’t be so sure. He’s the same age as Ekwonu. He’s had a much more impressive career arc/progression than Icky has. He’s the better pass protector. As far as I see it if Walker has a good year I’d bring him back over Icky. Ekwonu isn’t some elite franchise LT. Playing next to Lewis is going to be great for Walker much like it has been for Icky. We definitely need to get younger/cheaper on the OL though so for this reason alone it’s still top of my list come round 1 if board falls this way  Could also use another corner with Mike Jackson’s deal up after this season and needing a nickel but Corey Thornton looked really good in that role in the limited time we got to see him. However he’s coming off an achillies injury and you never know with those.  Then as mentioned above we do still have a need at WR. As far as “weapons” go it’s kind of a 2 man show with Tmac and Coker and neither is a burner. If Jordan Tyson is there at 19 and we can have a young WR group locked up for cheap that’s a huge advantage cap wise  And don’t forget linebacker. That clip in Devin’s Lloyd blueprint they used from Evero saying they need more intelligence there could’ve been left out for Wallace’s sake but it’s true. Wallace is lost in coverage. Pair a smart linebacker with Lloyd and that’s a group with Wallace and Cherelus being depth
    • The fact that this is even a discussion is a testament of the level of front office badassery that's going on.
    • Not always. LT was for the Giants. So was Ray Lewis. Von Miller was moreso than Manning his final year in the season that shall not be named. It's usually the QB, but not always.
