Gabbert On The Radar?

I don't think a QB will go in the top 10 this year.

Maybe not, but if that's the case then they will damn sure all be gone when the Panthers pick again in the 3rd round.

I know I know...trade down. The problem with that is that somebody has to be willing to trade up to #1, and I just don't think that is gonna happen.

I guess we could go the other route and try to sign a decent veteran to develop Clausen, but if that doesn't work, then a year from now we will be right back in the same place again, except we probably won't have the #1 pick with which to draft Luck.

It's a quandry I tell you.

We are going to upgrade the quarterback position whether through the draft or free agency. We should all hope the CBA somehows gets done and we get who will be available before the draft. I guess it depends on whether they think the guy for the future is already here or can be found in a trade. That would make it easier Hurney to not have to consider another QB pick in the draft. He might even use the number 1 draft pick to trade for someone if he feels they are a franchise guy and the other team is willing to give up a few later round picks in the deal. Who knows at this point.

It is interesting to follow the daily speculation and watch guys go up or drop down in the draft evaluations.

I expect that three QB's will go in the first round, possible all four of the QB's that have a first round grade will.

Gabbert was considered a top 10 pick when Luck was still in the draft thought process.

Gabbert, Newton and Locker are all expected to go in the top 15 at the moment with Mallet and Locker interchangable with that 3rd spot.. One of those guys will probably slide into the 2nd round... Not that I think Newton is better, I just think he gets drafted higher because of his athletic potential

Then you've got another list of about 4 QB's or so that are 2nd - mid round talent at QB.

If you watch his video, he considers Locker a top 15 talent at QB, with Gabbert rated higher. (top 5 or so)

Mayock's Rankings

QB's

First-round potential

Blaine Gabbert, Missouri

Jake Locker, Washington

Cam Newton, Auburn

Ryan Mallett, Arkansas

Next level

Andy Dalton, TCU

Ricky Stanzi, Iowa

Colin Kaepernick, Nevada

Pat Devlin, Delaware

To add on to this, I think you'll see Carolina, Tenn, Washington, Minny, Arizona and possibly Miami look at QB in this draft. Yes, I put Carolina on that list. Cause I think they take one, It's obvious that Rivera doesn't like the potential of JC and will look to add other QB's to the roster and the most obvious spot to do that since there can't be any trades and the CBA isn't expected to be agreed on by draft time is the Draft.

I'm currently leaning toward Carolina taking either Gabbert or Fairley with the first pick...

They, like us, don't want a project. They need a QB who can come in and play now. I suspect they will be looking for a FA as well, driving up the price.

Why do people keep saying that? Even if we could have gotten Andrew Luck, he would have most likely struggled as a rookie and there is no chance in hell we would win a Super Bowl with him as a rookie. So what is the big deal about getting a guy who can play right away if he's only going to get you a couple more wins (at best) anyway? Drafting a QB is a long term investment, not a quick fix that will make everything magically better right away. They are all projects.
