Why in God's name would we pick Bowers #1?

DEs:

Charles Johnson (All-Pro caliber)

Tyler Brayton (reliable starter)

Greg Hardy (young guy with potential)

Everette Brown (see Hardy)

DTs:

Nick Hayden (backup quality at best)

?????

Why then does Todd McShay have us picking Bowers, then Denver picking Fairley? We need to pick the best player available at the position that we need and would improve our team the most, which is DT, and Fairley is the best player at that position.

Most people outside of Tuscaloosa agree.

Or, are we going to just stockpile 5 good DEs, have lousy DTs and hope for 1-2 wins next year? Will this front office show a desire to win?

He isn't. And why pick a guy at a position we don't need? I hope the front office isn't that stupid, but they probably are.

Yes.... he isn't in your opinion, others think he is.... Who's the BPA is very debateable at this time.

Also DE are good, not great.... Average does not win Title's. IF the team feels that Bowers is a much better player than Nick.... Than draft him.... This is all Mute to me anyway as I would like attempt to improve the bottom ranked NFL offense with the #1 pick.

cause some people thing he is BPA? hell i dont know

Tyler Brayton: 22 tackles, 0 sacks

Everett Brown: 25 Tackles 3.5 sacks

Greg Hardy: 30 Tackles, 3 sacks

TOTAL: 77 tackles, 6.5 sacks

Charles Johnson 62 tackles, 11.5 sacks

You can make a case for an additional DE. The first pick of the draft does not have to go to the biggest need; there are other rounds, trades, and free agency.

DE is important in an attacking 4-3. Bowers eliminates the need for rotations between Brayton, Brown, and Hardy.

yep. Carolina needs two DEs that can have a consistant impact. We got 2 role players in Brayton and Brown, a young and unproven Hardy, and our 1 DE doesn't have a contract.

DE is a need. Not as big of a need as DT but we need more than 1 stud and a commitee of somewhat okay DEs.

meh, I am happy with our DEs overall. As much as I teased Brown, he really showed improvement this year... and Hardy is downright scary.

If we go DL, we better go DT. DT is obviously a bigger need than DE. So the only reason you'd go DE is if Bowers was so far ahead of others as far as BPA goes there was no question you had to grab him.

That is not the case, tho.

DE is about 6th in terms of need. The depth there is much better than DT, QB, WR, TE, and RG.

You are that confident in our CBs...? If we don't keep Marshall CB is a bigger need than WR IMO... and even if we do, I think it's still a bigger need than DE, lol.

I agree with you though. DE isn't even in our top 5 positions of need.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
