Clausen poised for improvement?

Once again, it really isn't that hard for Clausen to improve. He could throw one touchdown pass to a WR, and that would be an improvement. I wonder how many QB's threw 4 TD's in one game which would be more than Clausen threw for all last year. The only gimme TD that he didn't have was the one to Stewart, and that was a broken coverage.

At this point I would be happy with Mark Bulger if we draft Newton. IMO there would be no one better in the leauge to teach young QBs then that guy. Cause lets face it, he would not want a starting gig at this point and would be a stop gap early. Tommy Maddox 2.0

Regardless of who we draft, I'd rather we have a starter with a few years of experience.

Drafting college kids and getting them killed in their rookie season until one survives is not the solution to finding a franchise QB.

If they can play, let them. Clausen wasn't ready, and I think with the expectations put on him from scouting reports the fanbase felt cheated in a sense. This does not mean he cannot play. He loves the game and doesn't have the "ideal" physical traits, but not every player at every position can. QB's take time to grow. Matt Moore's shellshock, the offensive line, the running game, the tense line drawn between coaches and the front office, and the urgency to win simply compounded an already fragile situation.

If we can get a starter to come in of any age that Clausen and Pike can learn from, we'll be able to see how they pan out towards the end of next season (assuming it happens, for all the doom and gloom folk).

I'm part of the boat that wants a capable QB who is going to win football games and allow for the young core to grow. Whether or not that is Moore, Clausen, Pike, a free agent, or an incoming rookie does not remotely matter. Get the best man available for the job and put him there.

Dude Volek was AWESOME you remember that one time in that one game where he completed that one pass and then went back to the bench? AWESOME.
yeah, he's only 6'2, but its a TALL 6'2.

sure, he's 35 years old, been in the league for 10 years and has only played in 24 games, but he started a whole 10 games and was actually able to win 3 of them! sure, its been 6 years since he started a game and 7 years since he won one, but he looked kind of good in a couple of those games. forget that those games where he threw 3, 4, and 4 TDs (accounting for more than half of his 18 TDs thrown in 10 years) were against the 28th, 30th, and 32nd ranked pass defenses and he still managed to lose those games.

he sure would be a good role model for our young QBs. i mean his example of how to run away from competition and whine to your FO when you aren't outright given the starting gig will surely help our QBs in their careers.

meh....

What gets me is that very few people want to give Jimmy Clausen the benefit of the doubt when it comes to John Fox and Davidson.

Though I have never read anything that Fox actually said about Clausen, many have posted that Fox didn't care for Clausen. That sure wouldn't help a Rookies confidence if the HC could give a rats @$$ about you.

Davidson scheme was 150x worse then D. Henning. Don't we remember how he was gonna move Smitty around to get him the ball. I didn't see much of that at all.

Many blame Clausen for dinks and dunks but that may have been Davidson telling him not to waste a shot down field in double coverage to Superman....I mean Smitty (a la Jake Delhomme)

I think there are plenty of JUST MAYBE's to believe in a better scheme Clausen will shine.

I don't know the answer about Clausen, really none of do but I think the issues from 2010 warrant a MULLIGAN.

Fox didnt like Clausen because he was not ready. All Fox wanted to do was to make it to 8-8 and then leave,Clausen screwed that up for him. Now we have a new coach and a new philosophy. He will get his shot along with a Rookie and Vet.

Yeah, 8-8 was all Fox wanted. He may even wanted *gasp* 7-9.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
