Report: Panthers engaged in pre-draft trade talks about Jadeveon Clowney

The Panthers had pre-draft talks with other teams about trading edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, David Newton of ESPN reports.

It is unclear where those talks stand now that the draft is into the third day, but it does cast uncertainty about Clowney’s future in Carolina. The Panthers have added edge rushers Nic Scourton and Princely Umanmielen since the draft started.

General Manager Dan Morgan twice was asked about whether Clowney is part of the team’s plans for 2025, and he was noncommittal.

“We’re still working through the roster,” Morgan said, via Newton. “We’re still talking through things. Obviously, we’re focused on the draft right now and what’s in front of us.”

Clowney, 32, is in the final year of a two-year, $20 million deal he signed with Carolina a year ago. He is set to count $13.775 million against the salary cap after having 5.5 sacks last season.

The No. 1 overall pick in 2014 has never had more than 9.5 sacks in a season and has only 58 in his 11-year career.

I doubt he brings much in trade value. Odd that we will be looking to move on being that he is decent, and the team doesn’t really have proven playmakers at the position. He was forced into a full time role when he is better suited being more rotational and isn’t really breaking the bank. I wonder if he is not a good locker room fit…

He's a rotational level player at this point. I doubt any team wants to take on the contract. He'll have considerable interest if he's released. The ideal situation would be if he would take a pay cut to stay. Have his agent do some work to gauge his value around the league and come back with the number they'd be happy with to stay that's less than the current figure. If it makes sense keep him, if it doesn't then take the cap savings and free up snaps for the rooks.

    • I may be way off base, let’s include this in that questions thread, but with the way the offensive staff turned on each other in 2023 I am happy to see anyone involved, gone. I had a bad feeling about Caldwell over it.
    • No poo tho you might could Jenkins for Legette. They got nothing at WR after the big 2 in Cincy. I don’t think you trade away OL depth. Could get a quality player in cuts. Really that 3-4 end spot what you should be looking for is someone who is stout with long arms and can push back the OL in both the run and pass game for others to make plays…. But we signed Wharton, sometimes I think Evero is a fraud ass nerd who should be an analyst at best.
    • you would honestly probably do Monroe Freeling more of a disservice by putting him in a position where is not yet ready to succeed. .we all knew Monroe Freeling struggled at the NFL combine in drills because of technique related issues & would need time to develop  & now all of a sudden before they even put the pads on Monroe Freeling is somehow a starting LT in the NFL ? if he struggled at the NFL scouting combine what do you actually think is going to happen in a live NFL game at LT ? .even our best LT of all time was not ready to start at LT when he was a rookie & he turned out to be a pretty good darn LT by the name of Jordan Gross ...just saying be patient Young Jedis
