Clowney released

Y'all forgetting about Maz Mwansa.  

He would be the fifth DE IF the cut Barno and DJ Johnson.  He would not cost us a roster spot--and that is the key.

"Carolina’s pass rush is being reshaped under new outside linebackers coach AC Carter, and recent addition Patrick Jones II. While Mwansa won’t count against the active roster thanks to the IPP slot, his upside is significant. He’s been likened physically to Eagles pass rusher Nolan Smith Jr. and already shows flashes of edge-bending potential.

Panthers Director of Player Personnel Cole Spencer summed it up: “Anytime you get a raw ball of clay like that, and the league affords a roster spot, it’s pretty cool.”

We brought him in to be a bridge and depth piece. Not sure what we can find out there with the $7m that would be better, would have preferred keeping him this year thought we would have a good rotation with him, Wonnum, and the rooks.

I thought he was being signed to play opposite Clowney but he was signed to replace Clowney

It's just clowney, it isn't the end of the world.  Scourton is a 3 down player from the get

Banking on a rotational player to step up. 

Hope he does well here.

Hard to justify not keeping him through camp though before you see what your young guns can do. 

Watching games last year he was one of the few on defense that seemed to give real effort the majority of the time.

Oh, I don't think the world of Clowney, never did.  Although he was a well rounded edge.

I was saying he should go and I am a lifelong Gamecock fan--but I don't care who wanted him to stay.  Why is that important?  I see both sides--but Clowney was gone by round 3 of the draft.

I like this because it means one or both of the rookies will be thrust into a bigger role right away and we can see what they might be.

I don't like this because it just makes our team that much younger and inexperienced.  You need vets to help the young guys learn, I just hope we aren't going too far in the opposite direction.  All our FA signings were guys just coming off their rookie deals too, I get why we're doing it, but having the savvy vets help in other ways too.

Yeah, we are gonna be raw.  Wonnum, for the past 3 years, has been averaging 8 sacks a season (4 in one season when he missed half a season).  I am OK, but yes, they will be thrown to the fire.
