This is high school.

they don’t need to be offering anything a typical student wouldn’t get. They are STUDENT-athletes. They are athletes second and that is a distant second in the grand scheme of things. As such, they shouldn’t get any more benefit than a theatre or band kid.

but I digress, I’m sure I’ll be flamed for that opinion as we are in an era of putting everyone who plays sports on a pedestal, no matter how young.

This is the pearl clutching college sports fans held onto for decades. Glad to see it still going strong, just shifted to HS now. LOL

Bingo. Weirdly this stuff always only applies to athletics.

People only want to make a stink about it when it pertains to athletics. There are probably reasons for that, but that discussion is indeed a rabbit hole.

I think that all students should be held to at least minimum standards academically so that they don't fall through the cracks, because most just aren't going to make it to (or even stay in) the pros. I've seen cases where kids are allowed to skate, slip and ultimately bust their heads because they thought that they were more "special" than they really were.

Prior to NIL and the transfer portal you at least didn't have the open free agency that has existed at the HS level for years.

I like the free agency. It actually helps basically all schools across the board.

Pretty much only ancient HC's and/or HC's that haven't been able to adjust have been complaining about the free agency.

Your fortunes can be made or broken every offseason. It's not like before where a bad recruiting class or two meant multiyear purgatory.

I will never understand all the bellyaching about the NIL.

If you want to talk about what ruined college athletics, it has been naked greed. Conference expansions for TV revenue, ever skyrocketing AD and facilities costs and now the attempts to permanently ruin the postseasons(football and basketball).

All the kids did was get a very well deserved piece of a very, very, VERY broken pie.

So if one of the parents wants to buy the theatre group or the band lunch they should get banned?

Buying the band lunch during an official function is one thing.

Buying transfers through promises of financial aid from individual coaches, donors, etc. is another. Now I'm not saying that's what Teddy did and I don't think that's what he did, so I think they are mis-applying the rules here. I find his situation different from say, what Pruitt was doing at Tennessee.

It's sort of like what Saban helped his players do. Buy them Ferrari's, lodging, etc. You know?

Right but this sounds more like a guy who loves the game and wants to give back by helping local kids play that game.  Giving potentially underprivileged kids an uber home or buying them food isn’t cheating.  It’s being a good person.
