The only one I can think of that had to ride the pine before taking the reins was Love in Green Bay

Hurts rode the pine behind Wentz most of his first season And Purdy was behind Lance and Garrapolo until they both got hurt. Hell, I don't think he was active roster until 2/3 of the way through the season.  Both were drafted as developmental QB's and both were starters by the end of season 1, then never looked back. Not exactly what you meant since both did start their 1st season, but neither were supposed to and neither were 1st rounders.

….and only Jayden Daniel’s and Purdy look they will be something.

Maybe JJ McCarthy and Penix.

Stroud seems to be on a extended downward trajectory.

The Panthers chose poorly picking Bryce, but did they ever have a chance given our hypothetical top options were Bryce, CJ, Richardson, and Caleb the following year?

I doubt we would have chosen Jayden with the #1 pick.

In hindsight, our best option was sticking with Baker.

Man, a QB like Stroud goes to two straight playoffs after his team was 4-13 and he’s trash? Bo Nix had his team in the playoffs and also has the second most TDs by a rookie QB but he’s trash too? Maye looked solid as well.

Weird that you are bashing on the QBs drafted since 2022 and the 2024 class might be one of the best ever on early results. It’s pretty damn rare to have several QBs look good after one year. We knew 2022 sucked before the draft and it was kind of surprising that any QBs went in the 1st. 2023 was just OK but Stroud has been fine. 2025 is way too early.

Anyway, 47 is kind of a ridiculous number as it includes 7th rounders. If you look at first rounders, it paints a different picture. 1 in 2022 that sucked and we knew it. 3 in 2023, 2 of whom are starting. 6 in 2024, all of whom are starters now. 2 in 2025, one of whom is starting. So, while they’ve had different levels of success, 9 out of 12 first round QBs since 2022 are their team’s starters.

We had the top pick and it looks like we made multiple mistakes by trading up for who we did because 2024 looks like a crazy good QB class.

All you can really do is keep taking shots until you hit on a player. This honestly isn't anything new. QBs have always been a crapshoot.

1ST ROUND QBs SINCE 2010:

HOME RUN (ELITE/FRANCHISE QB):
Cam Newton (2011)
Andrew Luck (2012)
Patrick Mahomes (2017)
Josh Allen (2018)
Lamar Jackson (2018)
Joe Burrow (2020)
Justin Herbert (2020)
Jordan Love (2020) - DEBATABLE ELITE/LONG-TERM STARTER, BUT TRENDING UP.
Jayden Daniels (2024) - TRENDING.

BUST (NOT AT LEAST A LONG-TERM STARTER):
Sam Bradford (2010)
The Golden Calf of Bristol (2010)
Jake Locker (2011)
Blaine Gabbert (2011)
Christian Ponder (2011)
Robert Griffin III (2012) - INJURY BUST
Brandon Weeden (2012)
E.J. Manuel (2013)
Blake Bortles (2014)
Johnny Manziel (2014)
Jameis Winston (2015)
Marcus Mariota (2015)
Carson Wentz (2016)
Paxton Lynch (2016)
Mitchell Trubisky (2017)
Josh Rosen (2018)
Daniel Jones (2019)
Dwayne Haskins (2019) - R.I.P.
Zach Wilson (2021)
Trey Lance (2021)
Mac Jones (2021)
Kenny Pickett (2022)
Bryce Young (2023) - TRENDING
Anthony Richardson (2023) - TRENDING

LONG-TERM STARTER (NOT ELITE):
Ryan Tannehill (2012)
Teddy Bridgewater (2014)
Jared Goff (2016)
Baker Mayfield (2018)
Sam Darnold (2018) - HARD TO RANK; WAS A BUST EARLY BUT LOOKS LIKE A LONG-TERM STARTER GOING FORWARD.
Kyler Murray (2019)
Tua Tagovailoa (2020) - UNTIL HIS NEXT CONCUSSION ANYWAY.
Trevor Lawrence (2021) - LONG-TERM STARTER, BUT CERTAINLY NOT ELITE.
C.J. Stroud (2023) - TRENDING/COULD BE BETTER.
Caleb Williams (2024) - TRENDING/COULD BE BETTER.
Drake Maye (2024) - TRENDING/COULD BE BETTER.
Bo Nix (2024) - TRENDING/COULD BE BETTER.

TOO EARLY TO TELL:
Michael Penix Jr. (2024)
J.J. McCarthy (2024)
Cam Ward (2025)
Jaxson Dart (2025)

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES:
Deshaun Watson (2017) - LOOKED ELITE FOR A MINUTE, THEN WENT TO HELL ON AND OFF THE FIELD.
Justin Fields (2021) - TOUGH TO RANK. COULD STILL BE A LONG-TERM STARTER, BUT LIKELY NEVER ELITE.

A lot of us said this at the time, it's not even hindsight. We should have kept the picks and stuck with Mayfield or Darnold 1 more year, or even let them both walk and still picked up Dalton in 2023.

If we were patient in '23, we would not be picking #1 in '24 unless we traded down. In that year's class, you left off Bo Nix and Drake Maye.  Nix was third for rookie of the year and Maye went 30-46 for a td and an int.

Honestly, 2020 and 2021 were the years we sat on our asses like idiots.

First being 2020.  Love may have been the one we missed out on with a trade down or a trade up from our 2nd pick.  And Hurts was a totally viable 2nd rounder to take a flier on after going DB.

Love in particular was one of those top guys pre-college season, but he had a lot of TOs his last year and some iffy decision making pegged him back by scouts.

If we hired a staff with a decent plan and vision (instead of Rhule and whatever he wanted to do) willing to groom him behind a vet, that may have been the money bet.  2021, it was Fields.  We could've tried him on for size, even if it didn't work, it would have put us in position to draft a QB in 2024.

It all sucks.  We chased.
