We have a Dave Canales Problem

obviously Canales isn’t Payton but this is a situation he hasn’t improved on or shown he can overcome in close to two seasons.

He’s had his own qb. He came to Carolina to coach him. Thats a choice he made. Bryce being here isn’t a positive argument to give him a pass for the past nearly 2 seasons. 

I know it was his first season as OC in 2023 but I really think that year is his ceiling as a play caller/coach

That Tampa offense was loaded. Evans and Godwin played all 17 games. Their OL is very solid

Mayfield had 5 games with less than 200 yards passing. A game with 206 yards and 202 yards in another 

He had 3 games with 300+ in regular season

That year Tampa finished 9-8 winning 4 of their last 5 games. Of their 9 wins only 3 came against teams that finished with winning records. Saints (1), Jags and Packers all finished 9-8. 

I think that’s probably our ceiling here with Dave and Bryce. We’re still a few pieces away on offense from matching that Bucs team but next year I can see us going 9-8 and winning the division. Saints aren’t going to be good for a bit. Atlanta doesn’t have a QB and Tampa is trending the wrong way. 

Unfortunately for us that might really screw us. We win division next year and it’s tough imagining Bryce not getting an extension and Dave isn’t going anywhere anytime soon then either. Together they’re not a good match.

they won that game because of the defense which again he has nothing to do with.

Those three touchdown passes were pretty decent, though. Even the most cynical has to agree to that.

After the Saints killed us, I was expecting the rest of the season to look just like that game.

It hasn't been anywhere even close.

Canales learns from his mistakes. Many coaches don't.

I put a lot of value in that character trait.
