From what I thought you have to completely secure the catch during falling to the ground. If you bobble it at all it isn't a catch. Or it's a fumble. Unless they blow the play dead, their argument is he was down by contact.

There's a difference between making a catch mid air and surviving the ground and catching it on the run, taking multiple steps and extending your arms, then having the ground cause a fumble
