I begrudgingly accept the 5th year option only because the 5th year is not guaranteed.  We can get out after next year if he doesn’t throw down.
History says he will not demonstrate his worthiness most of the year and then near the end he will somehow do just enough to keep the flame burning.  I feel like we are really and truly stuck.

In theory we can get out but its going to cost us.  Thats why picking up the 5th was always stupid.  If he hasnt shown he is the franchise guy by year 4 what the fug is giving him a 5th going to do?

I'm just speaking on the staff picking up the option... I've been said we need another guy in that room...

wasnt directed at you personally just saying the supporters are saying he is "progressing" but at some point he either is the guy or isnt.  His "progression" is at a damn snails pace and you simply cannot afford to ride him out for 5 years hoping he makes a monumental leap.

Your comment is ironic considering it's in a thread about Sam Darnold.

Who didn't play well in the NFL until his 7TH season!

Now I'm not advocating that we would or should ever keep Bryce around longer than next season unless he plays great.

But I think Sam (and Baker to a certain extent) have shown that QBs can still continue to develop after many years in the league.

Sure, agree.

To be fair, none of those guys have been in the league as long as Sam or Baker.

But I also don't expect any of them to develop into good starters in the future like Sam and Baker did.

There are absolutely more QBs that have failed and been discarded than examples like Sam.   My only point is that each player is unique and can develop at their own pace.  Maybe it's too slow for the team.  Maybe they don't put in the work, etc.    But not being a star by year 4 isn't a death sentence.

Baker was good in the past he was just a self admitted douche

Darnold always had the skills he was just thrust into the starting role at age 20.

Bryce doesnt have the physical skill set of either.  And if we dont know if he is the dude after year 4 its time to pull the plug, its as simple as that

I'm sure someone can look it up on this board, but back when we jettisoned Darnold, I'd tried to defend him saying that he was still a young QB with a high ceiling, he was just surrounded here with bad coaching and a poorly built team. I said he'd see a Super Bowl before we did.

And people just laughed.

Same folks who said Baker Mayfield sucked and was a washout. Same folks who live to slam Bryce. (And honestly, my decision on Bryce is still hanging out there, undecided, swaying from yes to no). I'm not saying I know a damned thing about raising up a QB, but I know that I'm not as clueless as some others.

Some of these kids that come out as top draft picks get thrown into the fire on a badly built team, a desperate lower tier HC, OCs and QB coaches that are struggling to move up the ladder and an injured, mad fanbase that wants immediate results or it's to the chopping block with some kid that just had the temerity to do well in college football and then come to the podium when their name was called.

You underestimate the stupidity of our owner. Bryce shouldn't have got the 5th year but he did. He hasn't had back to back franchise QB level game performances ever. Our franchise is being built on hope and a determined owner who will not admit he made the wrong choice.

Hey man baby steps. You aren't wrong, but 2022 Tepper and Fitt would have already signed him to a 3 year extension at 50M per. There aren't really any immediate upgrade options available this year in FA or where we will be drafting so I get the approach. I am nowhere near convinced Bryce is our long term guy yet, but also have to be realistic that we have a team to field next year. Regardless, I like our approach of building an actual team this time and if in 27 or 28 we decide we need a new guy, there's an actual NFL roster around him.
