Hate to ruin the vet QB idea but were stuck with Dalton next year as our backup. His 5.8 mill con1716507538_Screenshot2026-02-10at11_19_28AM.thumb.png.3fbdec9aa6fa22c6973ac0816a23433f.pngtract is basically entirely guaranteed. We cannot cut him therefore he will be on the roster next year, if we had a surplus of cap I could see us making the move but we simply are middle of the pack in cap and have glaring holes on defense that need to be addressed. Mark my words its a slim to zero chance we sign another vet qb for a vet standard 5-10 mill backup contract. Drafting a rookie is definitely in play in the later rounds, and could be a cheap contract to be the QB3 this year and take over QB2 the rest of their rookie contract. Would be nice to have a backup QB that could play in short yardage packages, would be interesting to see a player like Taylen Green in the 6-7th round to get a developmental prospect and our rushing short yardage QB option starting next year.

Green was a streaky QB at Arkansas, then again he was working with an Arkansas roster.  If a coach could really let him sit and develop he has a lot of tools to like.

Mafe at Edge, Cade Otton at TE should be some mid tier guys that would be nice upgrades.

I'd rather trade for Thibs that Crosby.  Younger and probably cheaper to acquire.

KT is a guy to keep an eye on in NY. Burns/Carter are nasty and if the Giants can gain some assets for Thibs, I think he could be a name on the move.

Main reason I'd stay away is his looming FA in '27. We'd give up some important draft capital and then have to pay him...while also wondering if he can get back to his first two years rather than his previous two.

I also could see Harbaugh wanting to roll three deep with his pressure rotations and just hang on to him. I question Schoen's ability to correctly navigate the waters, especially when he dodged getting canned this year.

Morgan and Schoen are buds, socially. Beane too. So looking at NYG as a trading partner makes some sense.
I think his history with Seattle could include them as well.

If anyone is getting scapegoated in Buffalo we might could get a good deal. I haven’t really followed the Bills but they will have a new DC I think. So some change there is maybe an opportunity.

For free agent QBs, I think you have to look at a cheap vet. Mariota would be ideal, but I could see him being pretty costly.

Tyrod Taylor is somebody I wouldn't mind. Trubisky and Zach Wilson are also worth a look.

Howell is obviously my preference but I wouldn't mind Mariota or Trubisky if we want to go the more established vet backup type guy. We just have to realize that we need to sign someone who might make Bryce look bad in camp by comparison. It is what it is.

Crosby is already expensive and about to be 30.  I'd prefer the younger cheaper option.  Thibs didn't get a ton of sacks this year but his pressures were up (might make him a little cheaper).  I really think he is one of the reasons Burns got so many sacks.  The new contract coming up is another reason he could be traded for less like Burns was for us, but that may fall more into next year.

This is why I hated the Dalton deal last year. He wasn't good in his stint before when Bryce was benched, and we signed him to 2 years almost fully guaranteed when he already had one foot in the career grave and the other on a banana peel. I'm still of the mind that they decided to sign the 5th year last season and signed Dalton to keep Young comfortable until he was finished with at least year 4.

I'm going to laugh like hell though when they extend Dalton another year after they announce Bryce's 5th year option. They'll call it a restructuring for cap relief but we'll know what it really is. Keep that QB room competition free.

which was why giving him a fresh 2 year deal was fuging stupid last year.  What was the point?

They like to reward players after the fact for intangible contributions.  Look at Adam Thielen.  Its stupid.  Its a business and I think its really dumb and wasteful to hand out contracts based on how cool they are in the locker room or how much we appreciated what they did 2 years ago for 1 game.

    • To be comforted by this hire, his position title needs to be  Dude who calls offensive plays instead of Dave Canales.  If someone could confirm that is written on his office door I will sleep better.
    • Should've been: Duren and Moose: 2 each (Duren for starting it, Moose for going crazy after lol) Bridges: 3 (1 for defending Moose, 2 for escalating further with Stew) Stewart: 10 (fug that dude, came off the bench, long history already, NBA should've sent a message with double digit games)   Oh well, I think we can weather the storm for 4 games. A win tonight would be huge as the next couple after are tough, vs Houston and Cleveland. Last game against the Wizards should be a win even short handed. Then back to full strength and keep the train rolling. Still thinking we get a 7 or 8 seed and win 1 of a potential 2 in the play-ins to make the real playoffs. 6 seed and skipping the play-in entirely is a tough ask. But I do think we are better than Magic, Heat, Hawks and can pass 2 of them before the end of the regular season.
    • Hmmm... Well, one of them consistently got dumb penalties that you never see any other receiver commit like offensive offsides on 4th down. One of them consistently would just run routes out of bounds for no reason. XL's only saving grace is that he has been a solid blocker at WR for us There is a reason XL often didn't get the ball thrown to him - he made some of the dumbest mistakes I have ever seen from a receiver... Even receivers that have zilcho talent (Mingo, Terrace Marshall, and all of our other WR draft busts) didn't make mistakes this dumb. It is bad enough when you aren't helping your team because you can't get open; it is much worse when you are so bad and dumb that you are actively hurting your team. I honestly don't think there is any fixing XL. The dude is just an idiot and lacks any kind of awareness and common sense on and off the football field
