Hurney, only Clausen supporter on the Staff

Recommended Posts

Big F'ing surprise. Hurney will go down with the ship.

Is it that hard to admit that you made a mistake?????????

If Dwayne Jarrett didn't get a DWI during the season last year, I'd be willing to bet that he would still be on the team.

Hindsight. I was happy with the Clausen pick and the Jarrett pick when they were made. Most people were. They were tremendous values.

Now the Edwards pick nearly cost me a marriage and a TV.

I just get so pissed when I think about Everette Brown and Armanti Edwards. Those guys could of been had without trading future picks. He over values midlevel talent. It's like he is constantly trying to find the next diamond just so he can be labeled as some kind of draft guru.

And lets not forget: If Hurney could have pulled it off, he was going to trade UP to get Clausen! He was trying to trade this years 1st rounder for Jimmy. He just couldn't find a taker. STUPID!

SuperLego:

I wouldn't normally respond to a post like this... but fug it.

No money to bring in FA's 2 years ago and we were going young last year plus there weren't any great FA's that we could have had unless we got into a bidding war.

A few things.

#1. In 2009, despite the big Peppers contract, we were under the cap $1 million dollars. We had room for some moves. We made NONE.

There was no cap last year. So the "no money" thing does not apply to last year.

#2. Of course there would be a bidding war for Free Agents. That's what makes them Free Agents. But all reports were that we didn't even TRY to get anyone.

Trying and failing is one thing. Not trying at all is another.

If Jake didn't get the contract we couldn't have signed our draft picks that year, the extension saved some cap room.

Correct.

However, a FIVE year deal with guaranteed money? Really? That's the failure part of the contract. He cost us money in 2010, and wore a Browns jersey.

If we didn't franchise Peppers we couldn't have traded him, he would have been a FA, would you rather we traded him for less than his true value and look like we have been bullied by a player?

I'd rather we had saved the cap space and off-loaded a disgruntled player for SOMETHING, yes.

Clausens been here a year, stop being so dramatic and saying hes a bust, you can't know he is.

Our franchise has never seen QB play as bad as Clausen's. For a frame of reference, his rookie numbers are almost identical to David Carr's. He was put into a role he wasn't ready for, and got terrible coaching that will follow him through his career. He might be a decent backup one day, but as a starter, he's a bust.

As said before the AE fiasco came from JR, but even if it didn't Hurney didn't know we were going to have the first pick of this draft, if we had an 8-8 record I don't think it would have been that big a deal, the general rule of drafting is that if you're trading a future pick for a pick in the current years draft you have to trade a pick that is 1 round better.

Again, do you have any proof of JR pulling the trigger on AE? In contrast, Hurney's comments on him were glowing of AE when they drafted him.

In any case, it makes NO sense to trade up, essentially using a pick, and a future pick, just to draft a player out of position, and bank on him having a skill set he's not used his entire college career. Bone. Headed.

The Brown bust? Give the guy a chance, 2 years here, both with awful DT's, when he has some help in the middle he might turn out a decent prospect.

Note I said "potential". I believe he's too small to be an effective DE in a 4-3. Maybe Rivera can find a niche for him tho. Again... Potential...

The bad part of it is that we traded up to get him, when his physical tools were not comparable to the man he was to replace (Peppers).

Yeah Jarrett was a bust, but he was a 2nd rounder, it isn't the end of the world and Hurney can't hit on everything.

Yeah, but its just one more in the string of misses he's had as I outlined already.

The Ken Lucas bust? He done a job while he was here, it wasn't like he turned up an awful player and didn't even see the field.

So why is he gone? And what has he done since he left? He was a bust dude.

I'm not a Hurney apolagist, I just don't like to see people make stuff up without providing evidence to prove their point.

What am I making up exactly? I'm simply stating my opinion on the facts at hand.

Edit: I probably should have broken the first paragraph into smaller chunks.

Yes, you should have, but I did it for you. You're welcome.

Here is what might happen: The Panthers are torn. The GM wants a safer first rounder, the coach wants a QB with "IT". Other teams will want the QB with IT too. They might offer too much to turn down. Take Tennessee, for example. Could you turn down their first rounder (#8), their second rounder (#38 or so), a fourth rounder, and their first rounder next year? We could build a lot with that kind of return for dropping 7 places. Tennessee needs a mobile QB to compliment Chris--why Vince made them good.

The owner liked VY--just not the voices in his head. Cam is better and has skeletons in his closet, but no voices.

I would take that deal.

The trade for AE will go down as the dumbest move Hurney made as GM.

I don't know about that....Edwards is a beast of an athlete. In a modern day NFL offense he could shine. Too early to bash the move imo.

Dude you are all over the trade train WOOO WOOO!!!

Depends on how much we love a guy to how much it will take to part with the pick.

Yeah, I wouldn't call him a "bust" just yet (and didn't in this thread). But how we got him was just fuging stupid. He would have been available later.

Hurney is on the Clausen train because he is not a great judge of talent. Picking Newton this year would also signal Clausen was a mistake. Instead he has to believe that Clausen is more than everyone thinks he is at this point. If Chud and Shula were on the Clausen bandwagon there would reason to get excited. But when your offensive guys who are supposed to know offense quarterbacks don't think they can win with Clausen, there is a problem, Houston.

I am starting to accept the fact that we could take Newton. If we do, that means we looked into him closely. If they feel good about him, I do to. CHeck out the new thread I started about QBs with IT. Should help people look at Cam positively. I think huggers need to realize that the pressure begins when/if we draft cam.

I would like a trade. This pick could do for us what the Hershel walker trade did for Dallas 20 years ago.

Besides that, Teeray, I am just saying there will be offers. The GM pulls the trigger. THe coach gives input, so do the scouts, but Hurney has the call. If he sees three starters for one QB who is being debated, he will make the trade. A lot can change. A team who needs a QB desperately and does not have even a Clausen on the bench is going to throw an offer at Marty, especially if their lips are as stained by the Cam-aid like folks around here.

If we are still interested in Cam in mid April, I will suspect trade, but feel that we looked him over and think he is worth the risk. I respect that. But now, they are in the process, so any words about how much we love him or are taking him are premature.

Another source within the Panthers FO contradicts that, says that many within the league and within Carolina think Clausen isn't washed up - yet. Also says that the move to draft AE was JRs.

If you believe Yasinskas, Hurney actually isn't the only guy who likes Clausen.

He's beat around the bush a lot, but it's not hard to figure out that the guy he's talking about is Jerry Richardson.

I still dont understand what people see in clausen besides his robot like foundation of fundamentals......he was a loser in college, and looked little out there on the field....didnt throw one impressive touchdown, didnt make any state of the union speeches....didnt have any faith in his eyes.....I just dont get all the clausen hype or potential talk....you watch the tape and he looks bad, no QB instincts at all....and his deep balls look like toss ups.....i just dont see it
