Gil Brandt on Gabbert's pro day, not so sure Newton should go # 1 overall anymore...

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Six NFL head coaches, including four whose teams have picks among the top eight in next month’s draft, showed up here at Missouri’s pro day seeking answers to a few questions concerning quarterback Blaine Gabbert, most notably his deep-pass accuracy.

Gabbert couldn’t have done better had he borrowed Drew Brees‘ right arm. All the questions about his accuracy should start to go away after his workout in front of approximately 125 scouts, coaches and GMs.

He threw 50 passes, only one of which was uncatchable — a “go” route he overthrew to the left on his 36th attempt. He had one other pass, a deep post, that probably would have been intercepted in an NFL game. Other than those two passes, he showed remarkable accuracy at all points on the field. He also showed how athletic he is, good velocity on his passes, and an ability to get the ball out of his hand quickly.

His workout was outstanding — much better than Cam Newton’s at Auburn’s pro day on April 8. Newton had six passes that were uncatchable at his workout, although it was outdoors in windy conditions. I wrote after Newton’s workout that he should go No. 1 to the Panthers. I’m not so sure now.

i'm not going to be opposed to gabbert if our front office thinks he's the guy.

but it cracks me up when these "experts" just immediately forget about performance during hours upon hours of actual competitive game time in lieu of performance on 50 passes that have been rehearsed over and over for weeks with the same receivers running the same routes and no one is in pads and there is no pass rush and or coverage...

yeah i know that was a run on sentence.

it just seems to me that these pro days are nothing but a glorified game of catch for quarterbacks.

My worries with Gabbert has never been his arm or accuracy. That was something that became the buzz of the week last week for whatever reason.

My worry has always been his pocket presence and his ability to deal with the threat of pressure. He goes into panic mode and that is something you can't really gauge at a pro day.

But I trust our FO to fully evaluate these guys and determine which is their guy (if either of them)

      I'm probably one of those posters, but I make those posts because there are too many things going on that don't make sense. For instance, how does a RB that does something that hasn't been done in 14 years immediately get reverted back to 2nd string, and it takes a leadership council to make him the starter when he's averaging 3x the YPC? Your average fan shouldn't be screaming that for 2 weeks before the coach sees it. And that's one of many.  What you're seeing is frustration that we could be better, that we should be better, if our owner, FO, and coaches could do things that are so painfully obvious to even the most basic fan

      I think we're all struggling with what things are right now and what they have been. It's like getting ready to have bandages removed after a long period of injury. The healing, the new growth, they aren't going to be pretty, there's going to be some ongoing issues for a while at best and there's every chance that we're going to have to go back into the bandage situation all over again. And that sucks. But it's also a place where maybe, just maybe, the recovery is going to finally start happening. The bad days will be getting behind us.  It's not going to happen this year, but I believe from what I see that this year is showing that improvement. We focus on the QB because that's what all the pundits focus on, because it's the flashiest and most heralded position on the field. No one wants to put out a tweet about how a center is holding down their job and anchoring a line. They rarely celebrate that blocking tight end or special teams gunner. That fourth CB on the depth chart? Not a mention. And yet, those guys are the kind that we've been building here, we're building the lunch pail guys AND finding some future stars.  Is Bryce one of them? Might be a cornerstone of the team in the future as the second QB, might somehow just show out to end the season. Might flame out like many expect. But if that uncertainty is all we concentrate on, we're just going to miserably look at this team and maybe miss out on some solid green shoots that are finally beginning to poke through into the sunlight.
