Wild ride for QB's on draft day?

I've been looking at all these QB's in the draft, much like everyone else here. Gabbert and Newton really haven't impressed me at all, and I don't think I'm alone in this. In fact, a lot of the so called 2nd tier QB's have impressed me more. When I look at the evidence, guys like Dalton, Stanzi and Ponder have looked really good to me.

Now I'm not here to convince you to see things the same way I do, because that would be pointless against huddlers lol. I do think however that this could be a WILD, WILD ride on draft day. I mean I can see both Newton and Gabbert dropping Brady Quinn style, teams trading up to take one of the other guys over them and I still wouldn't be surprised. The draft every year is insane, but I've never expected the insanity like I do this year. Buckle up boys, it's gonna be nuts.

I read that they were expecting 5 to go in the first (Gabbert, Newton, Mallett, Locker, and even Kaepernick). No way. After the Jags pick at 16, who else really needs a QB?

I think you will see 5 DEs picked in the first round.

I agree that Newton will drop, but i think Gabbert will go top 3. I am not saying that is the case right now, but I am saying that I see Newton's stock dropping over the next 40 days and Gabbert's increasing. Why? Because he is more safe and he has high character. He is smarter, and he is not as rough.

If the Panthers want Newton, they should trade down with Cincinnati or Arizona.

If they want Gabbert, they better take him first overall.

It is a crapshoot.

That's cause you like underdogs.

...additionally the one's with big arms (minus Ponder), great records, great stats that showed improvement every year from pro systems. The athletic QBs are overshadowing the more Colt McCoy/Matt Schaub types in this draft. I think one of those three would work better than Clausen for us and could be made into a good NFL QB. We got Shula & Chud here to work with 'em for a reason.

Honestly, no it's not.

Gabbert has a horrible pass attempt to TD ratio. Most good NFL QB's had something like 15:1 in their college careers, Gabbert has something more like 30:1. He also has horrible pocket presence, to the point that I'm questioning his toughness.

Newton has issues that we all know about. I believe that he didn't buy a stolen laptop knowingly, but throwing it out the window isn't a sign of poise or maturity to me. I also find it difficult for him not to know that his father was getting some 'loyalty money' from Auburn. This is just my own speculation though. His subpar wonderlick score does worry me. We were having questions about his intelligence to start off with, given the super simple scheme he was running. A great majority of good NFL QB's have wonderlick scores of 25+, I don't think you can ignore that. I also don't buy into the 'upside' argument. I believe that whenever people refer to a player's upside, they are referring to their physical attributes. I'm not sure any of the top QB's have been praised for their upside coming out of college. People don't judge upside correctly when it comes to QB's imo.

Once again, I hope that these guys prove me wrong. I would love to draft one of these guys 1st overall and have them become great players. I just don't see it. Honestly, I really don't think I'm blinded with an underdog mentality here.

I'm still pissed about our 2nd round pick, being traded. We could have drafted Mallett with that pick.

I'm not sure we could've gotten Mallet, but yeah I think we could've gotten one of those guys .

I'm actually hoping that we trade down to the late teens, early twenties and draft one of these guys with it (right now, I'm thinking Dalton, yes I know it's not a popular stance). It'll be similar to what the Bucs did with Freeman. Honestly, he's really been showing me something, more than what Newton and Gabbert have showed me (at least from an NFL transition standpoint rather than a college dominance standpoint).

Well, the Seahawks for one. The Raiders. The Chiefs shouldn't hesitate to jump on one if they fall and they really like him.

I think Gabbert will be the best quarterback in this class if he lands in the right spot, but I'm not sure he will and he may be forced into action early in a bad situation. IMO, some of the other quarterbacks in this class outside of Newton/Gabbert have a chance to land some place where they can learn and develop... which may mean long term one of them will do very well.

If we can somehow get a 2nd round pick, Ponder or Stanzi would be a great pickup. My thoughts are that we should trade down so that we can still get either AJ Green or Julio Jones and get a second rounder from a team. Jacksonville, Cardinals, Titans, Vikings etc. would be possible partners. We get 2 instant upgrades at 2 major offensive positions for the worst offense in football.

We better make our #1 pick count. We need instant production

from that pick not some project QB that takes years to develop.

But If we do something dumb like taking a QB at #! I'd go with

Gabbert. He has the cocky swagger of Rothelisberger and throws

like Tom Brady. Gabbert >> Newton

    • Keep away from North Winston,  you should be fine. West Winston towards Clemmins is cool. If you're ever at the Peterscreek Walmart, the Pepsi guy is 😎.
    • Game-winning drives have been credited to QBs since the beginning of time
    • A lot of people have been slobbing all over this last draft but I hate the way that Fitterer/Morgan have built this offense since drafting Bryce. Anyone with eyes knew our IOL was crap but we didn't invest there and instead took project receivers and an injured RB. If you want a lesson in how build for your QB wrong, IMO, this was it. Draft him, protect him, THEN get him weapons. Its pretty much a rule, draft interior linemen, pay tackles. We're paying everyone. We had the opportunity to draft a center instead of Brooks, or perhaps instead of trading up for XL, trade back and take 2 guards/center. We could have paid Lewis and still drafted 2, but Hunt at 100m was just an overpay. And it's not like the guys many of us were begging us to draft were long shots. They're solid starters from day 1. Injuries happen. That's why all your starters can't be high value players. You need rookie contracts mixed in to be able to absorb those inevitable losses on the line. An offensive line playing an entire season together is an abnormality.  Factor into that also paying Moton 44m this offseason with a huge signing bonus when we didnt need to do right now to do him a "solid".  Now we have to sign Icky and possibly Bryce and it's a mess with more money tied up in the offense, inevitable cuts and dead cap coming. That's not even factoring in shifting Corbett to C last year after major injury to start at a position he's never played for an NFL season. It's all stuff that was foreseeable and pretty easily avoided.  The $$ and picks we've spent trying to surround Bryce outside of Tmac (Mitchell and Horn are TBD) have been used inefficiently IMO. Smarter drafting and FA with the line could have let us get more reliable weapons than XL and Sanders in FA. It might not be popular opinion, but I'll take a Bersin with hands that can get 6-8 85% of the time vs a big play XL with greasy fingers.  The part about hitting guys in stride was more about placement, which Bryce has struggled with. Obviously not every route is run to be hit in stride, but they do need to have the ball placed well to give the receivers a chance to do something after the catch. I just used Hill as an example because he's the biggest YAC threat I could think of over the past 5 years.   Receivers can feast on dink and dunk if it's schemed right. But to make it work, that vertical threat has to be there, if not the deep pass then the high speed routes that can spring someone for the huge YAC to keep the safeties from cheating into that 20 yard box all game.  I hope DC and Bryce can keep up what they did in the last game and it isnt just an Atlanta thing. But no matter what, I really want to see some better long term strategy coming from the FO.
