Rivera talks about Proehl

Inside the Panthers

Ron Rivera looks at Ricky Proehl and sees a former NFL player who was willing to do about anything to break into the coaching profession.

Kind of like himself.

Rivera hired Proehl, a former Panthers receiver who played 17 NFL seasons, as an offensive consultant after Proehl got in contact with him.

"Just listening to his passion when he talked, Ricky reminded me so much of myself when I got into it," Rivera said Tuesday. "That was probably the biggest thing that attracted me."

And Proehl showed recently he can help in other ways.

When there were only a few available receivers at Blaine Gabbert's private workout with the Panthers, Proehl jumped in and caught passes from the Missouri quarterback.

One adjustment I think we all need to make is to turn off our "Foxspeak" filters when listening to Rivera.

No coach, Rivera included, is going to show all his cards all the time, but the Human Cliche machine is gone.

Hurney is still Hurney, but Rivera's not Fox.

It's been speculated that "the process" is the rightful successor to "it is what it is".

Does anyone know whether "it is what it is" is even a part of Rivera's vernacular? If so, it'll be hilarious the first time he lets one slip during a press conference and everyone starts giggling uncontrollably.

I would think that having a coach who was a NFL WR of Proehl's caliber catch passes from a QB prospect would be an excellent way to evaluate that prospect... Proehl's caught passes from the best of them and can mimic exactly how an NFL receiver runs routes, etc.
