Kiper and McShay debate our #1 pick

I saw the segment on TV and it seemed to me that Kiper was more concerned about saving face on his backing of Clausen then he was about who we should pick # 1. If he says we should go QB, then he's contradicting himself in regards to Clausen.

if there is no one good enough to pick at number 1 why the hell would anyone trade down with us?

I don't know why this gets lost on so many people. There doesn't have to be anyone good enough for the #1 pick. There just has to be one TEAM who gets suckered in to thinking there is.

When there's not a clear number 1 that doesn't meet a need of the team that's number 1, the remaining reason for a team to move up is if they feel someone above them (not the number 1 team) might get a player they'd really want. Number 1 is the only guaranteed spot they can move into to absolutely guarantee them that pick.

That's about it. You can see a lot of reasons why teams with obvious QB needs (Bills, Arizona) might make a major move, but it costs a LOT to get number 1 and in a draft where there's LESS monetary risk in a draft (rookies won't get the Jarmarcus contracts) you just may see it. Might see a 2012 pick out of it versus this year.

I'd be more inclined to see this move if John Fox had NOT gone to Denver and a more aggressive coach move in that didn't like Orton or The Golden Calf of Bristol. Having a 3rd team in a major QB mix would've improved draft pick trading chances. There may be others, but someone 15+ in the draft would have to sacrifice too much to move up.

McShay is not reliable. I usually agree with Kiper especially when he does his analysis, but he's outta his damn mind on this one. He had us taking Blaine Gabbert, who should never be considered a #1 overall draft pick.

ugh i hate when people tell us to blindly trade down. if there is no one good enough to pick at number 1 why the hell would anyone trade down with us?

Just pick PP and let us move on

Because there is a player they want before someone else takes them even if they won't go #1. Imagine having the 5th or 6th pick and the person you really need is going 2nd or 3rd. This will make compensation suffer some but it's foolish to not consider the possibility. We have a lot of holes to fill so anyone will really do for us, that is why we have 8 candidates, along with a weak draft. Usually #1 overall doesn't have 8 prospects.

lol Guys, I do a big mock every year, going to different team forums for info. Let's just say we're not the only ones in the top 5 who wants to trade down -.-

I'm fine with the picks, though I can't really stand those 2. One's all hype and too worried about his image, the other one just doesn't know enough (not that either of them really do).

    • I've already addressed this notion in a previous reply. You are basing your assertion outside reality if you think Bryce would have not only been more successful but defeated the Patriots in place of Herbert. Bryce got blown off the field by that Patriots team with the highest paid OL in the league. We've seen Bryce with an OL that gave up 65 sacks and it resulted in the #1 pick. And that is not a defense of Herbert or arguing he is a great QB in any way. He has physical talent but he has been similar to Darnold early in his career in terms of his very up and down perfomances. However that does not change the fact that they have significantly less invested in the OL than the Panthers.
    • I think Tepper has been setting the stage where pending there is no miracle he wipes it all clean.  Think you already have been told that with small things like Evero staying.  Bryce is the guy next year.  OC, DC, everything stays the same.  QB room largely the same.  Nothing would really matter there.  They basically get one more shot and it goes how the schedule paired with our 27th ranked O predictably most likely goes.  Everyone out the door together.  Bryce is a bridge tier QB.  I don’t see Dave surviving where he could be bridge QB here in reality.
    • I think the D performed well over the season considering it was put together with Scotch tape.
