Panthers select Julio Jones?

According to Gantt's latest mock we do. Of course it comes after a trade back, but I wouldn't be upset with it, however, in this scenario Fairley is still on the board.

I'd rather take Fairley based on need, but Jones wouldn't bother me at all.

Thoughts?

In all seriousness, if we could get the deal he suggests I would like it, though I think I'd personally go in a different direction than WR. I understand how there is DT depth though.

Gantt seems to be sold on Newton more than he thinks the Panthers are, though.

I thought it was pretty absurd until he mentioned getting Marvin Austin with the second round pick acquired in the trade. Austin, Jones, and maybe Stanzi in the 3rd would be fine with me. Then we get Jordan Cameron (TE) at the end of the third and Marcus Gilbert (RT) at the top of the fourth and we would be doing pretty good in first four rounds. Throw in a corner, linebacker and maybe another DT and I'd be more than happy with those picks.

I wouldn't hate getting JJ but I'm not a huge fan. I'd probably go Fairley or Amukamara if the draft went like that. I know he's off the board when we pick in this mock but I think if we trade down a dark horse guy that I wouldn't mind taking would be Quinn.

I'd take that Skins deal in a heartbeat (though I'd probably try to get a future 5th out of them as well).

Also, I wouldn't mind trading down again if we could get a good deal. Drop down to about the 21-25 spot, get another 2012 1st rounder and take Pouncey.

    • Great teams build through the draft and have several young players that start that are on rookie contracts. It's important to hit on players in rounds 4 thru 7.  These should be future starters and solid depth.  When you hit on most of your picks you free up a lot of cap space for those one- or two-year players to fill spots you are thin at. No GM is going to perfect on all their picks.  You're going to whiff every once in a while.  That was Hurney problem.  He'd nail the first pick but after that it was reach after reach and we couldn't get any depth on this team. I'm excited about Morgan as our GM and hopefully he'll be around a long time.  It will be even better if Canales can continue to grow as a head coach, both in the development of young players and play calling. I remember last season after Young came back in the lineup and started to perform well.  We saw different plays I had only seen other teams use.   If Canales's play design and play calling continue to grow. Morgan and Canales will be linked together for a long time.  It would be nice to see a Coach and GM together for a decade or two. Go Panthers
    • They also came out for the encore and the singers were dressed in canes jerseys. Pretty fuging cool.
    • She kicked ass. Obviously not the same but it’s an absolute pleasure to see this band live. What a great evening.
