you never know... Alex Smith might even be that guy...

that is what people said about David Carr post Houston.

horrible QB play is normally horrible QB play......people like to blame the line, the play calling, etc. But normally crap is crap.

Keep in mind that the team has to keep in mind that if there is no season, and there is no real reason to think there will be(no real talks in over a month since the lockout started), we will hold the first pick in the draft next year, which projects to be one of the Best QB classes ever. Even if the NFL was to play, lets face it, odds are we wont be good. I think it makes sense to trade from 1 to 5-10, pick up a 2-3 this year and potentially a first next year. That way we can still get a guy that would be worth of a top pick in this weak draft (patterson, dareus, fairley, green) AND fill a big need for us. With that extra first that we would pick up, if we are even decent, it would be entirely possible to trade our first and the one we would gain to get in position to take luck/barkley/jones.

Trade 1st pick this year for 5-10 pick plus next year's first plus a 2nd this year and 3rd next year (value chart would probably be pretty close on this); let's just call it pick 7; Trade pick 7 for pick 16-ish and next year's first. Then trade that pick for pick 40 and next year's first; Package pick 40 and the 2nd we picked up earlier for pick 68 and next year's 1st; We'd start this year in the 3rd round, but pick up 4 first round picks next year!

I know....I know...not possible...just dreamin'

But just how close to that could we get though?!

If you feel like what we have isn't good enough, then why would you wait until the 2nd or 3rd to draft a guy? If you're not interested in a QB so much that you would trade down, to me that says you aren't interested in QB at all.

Matt Moore, Jimmy Clausen, (insert non-rookie name here)... Probably in that order...

So even after Rivera has repeated over and over we need a change at QB, we're going to stick with basically the same guys we had last year. Great! 3-13 here we come!

BESIDES, NEWTON IS SIMILAR TO CLAUSEN - Clausen is 1 read and check down, Newton is 1 read and run! We need a pocket QB who will stand in the pocket and make 3-5 reads and then trow with accuracy to a reciever. Newton will not last long taking hits when running. The Golden Calf of Bristol got smashed last year. Vick got knocked out of several games when sandwiched at the goal line. Newton will take hits like that funny looking guy in Detroit and end up rarely playing 16 game seasons for us.

You are joking right? You try to prove that they are similar but in doing so only prove how they are different. Also if you are not in a pro style offense in college, you will make one read and get rid of the ball. So by your logic Cam Newton is similar to almost every college quarterback. Even some that don't play in a spread offense.

Also Arron Rodgers ran a lot and may have got banged up. Same goes for Vick. Last I checked both made it to the playoffs and one turned out to be the superbowl MVP.

Your logic is a bit flawed.

This is not a thread about an individual player

I'm on the BPA/Trade Down bandwagon. But if we had to draft a QB this year it would be with the 1st pick.

I don't see how it makes any sense.

If you want to address QB in the draft then go big or don't draft one at all.

We already have so much youth at QB, adding more youth that isn't considered something special just doesn't make any sense. QB is the most important position so address it with the best pick.

This might sound a big naive but I doubt the FO has QBs ranked radically different than what you read in the media. I'm sure it's different but there is probably a correlation.

We can trade down and get Mallett, my signature says it all.

you have to watch the way these guys run though. Newton's not really as fast as Vick and Rodgers are and he ran the ball in some games 20 or more times, if that happens in the NFL, he's going to be hurt soon. if they draft him he must STOP running 20 times or more!!!!! it's ok if he runs like Rodgers does because he runs when the time is right. As for Vick, it took him a long time to become that MVP type of player.

do you seriously want Mallett. Let's say that Otah gets hurt again and misses time like he did last year and they have issues at pass protection. if you think Clausen was bad with the rush then Mallett will make you want Clausen's running back. Mallett is VERY slow. i dont mind Mallett if he's protected because his arm is VERY similar to Jay Cutler's, but his speed is similar to a Drew Bledsoe.

So you are telling me you think Rodgers is faster than Newton? If you go by 40 times Rodgers is slower. Also that was just his offense in college. If our coaches are making Newton run 20+ times per game we are going to have some serious problems.
