Gruden sold on Newton's potential

So John Fox, in 9 years as a HC, got 5 good years out of a veteran QB with almost zero starting experience. John Fox = poo with QBs

But Gruden, in 14 years as OC/HC, got 3 slightly better years out of a much more seasoned veteran QB with extensive starting experience. Jon Gruden = QB genius.

No, you're right, Gruden is sooo much better than Fox at judging/evaluating QBs :sosp:

Nice post though.

I never remember Fox having the best offense in 9 years either. Matter of fact I don't remember him having the best defense either.

But at least he was consistent... wait

That's funny, because I never remember saying he was a bad coach. In fact, I believe my exact words were, "I respect him a lot as a coach/analyst."

More Gruden:

I think The Golden Calf of Bristol is going to be a tremendous pro. He must continue to work on some of his mechanics, and he might not be a starter right away, but in a very short period of time he's going to be an excellent NFL player.

...

The Golden Calf of Bristol is going to be great for the league.

[Clausen] can throw the ball on the back shoulder. He can put the ball where he wants it and drive it when he has to, and that's important. He does it from the pocket, works underneath the center and in the gun.

I admire how he brought his team from behind to win four times this season, and he helped put them in position to win down the stretch, coming from behind, several other times. At crunch time, he really delivered.

When I look at quarterbacks and see how they play when they are tied or behind in the fourth quarter, that tells me a lot about them. Clausen excelled at crunch time. The statistics speak for themselves and he has shown dramatic improvement every year. He's a polished, confident kid and I like his upside. I think he's really going to work at it and continue to get stronger.

Obviously he's someone you want to listen to. :)

I think everyone is enamored by his potential but the truth is evaluating the intangibles is more difficult and impossible for us as fans to judge. The Panthers have had over 4 meetings with him and have a much better feel of all the intangibles.

I think it would be foolish to pick someone judged on potential alone.

Gruden didn't have really have a bad thing to say about any of the QB's last year. According to him they were all going to make it and be studs.

Wow one Newton Lover who knows the truth. So at least there are some logically thinking ones. Sumpy is speaking the truth in every aspect. You guys kill me. I'll take what he says will a little consideration but it doesn't sway me much. Cam lover's only have potential and hype to cling onto that is why threads like these are the holy grail. No sense is displaying facts they'll ignore everything.

I agree with Gruden, Cam is the best college player in the country no doubt at all. Potential was never questioned.

Who does he coach for? Oh that's right no one because no one wants him. I love how media go to Gruden for QB critiques. Who again has he taken from a rookie and groomed to be a perinial all pro/ HOF QB? That's right, no one.

Oh and Potential, the single work that has wrecked drafts and set teams back for years. That is why as a GM I wouldn't touch a guy that hasn't done it at the D1 level for at least 2 years, preferably 3-4.

I've been saying the same thing ever since he started doing his QB shows on ESPN. They hold him up as some sort of QB-judging god. When, in reality, he has shown little to no ability to accurately assess QB prospects.

I'm not saying that Cam will not be a good QB, I think he can be. I was just pointing out his history because, I knew some people would hold up Gruden's endorsement of Cam as canon.

BTW, he also loved teh Pickles coming out of college.

Didn't he turn Rich Gannon into an MVP who had spent his entire career in and out of the league as a back up until he was with Gruden??

In February 1999 Gannon was signed as a free agent by the Oakland Raiders. He excelled in Jon Gruden's West Coast offense and was voted to the Pro Bowl in his first year as a Raider - the first of four straight selections. In 2001 and 2002 he won the Pro Bowl MVP award consecutively, a feat achieved by no other NFL player. Gannon won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award after a record-setting 2002 season, throwing for 4,689 yards and 26 touchdowns, which helped the Raiders advance to Super Bowl XXXVII. He led the league with 418 completions on 618 attempts.

Not quite comparable to Jake and Fox.

Jon Gruden won't say anything critical about any of the guys. That just isn't his style. So if you are waiting for him to say "This guy stinks" it ain't going to happen.

Why?? Because he wants to get back into coaching and he would hate to get back in and go to a team with a QB that already hates you.

For that reason I almost didn't even post it. But I did so suck it.

But I think the article did infer that Gruden was sold on him being the potential #1 pick. We will know more when his special (that I am stoked about personally) airs on ESPN.
