Why It Might Be Dumb For Panthers To Trade #1 Pick by Steve Beck

The Carolina Panthers hold the coveted number one overall selection in the upcoming NFL draft on April 28th. But there are plenty fans, media, and draft prognosticators calling for the team to trade that pick. There desire for a trade comes because many believe there is no ONE player that stands above all the rest or that proves to be a huge difference maker.

I don’t disagree, and I can actually relate with the thought process of trading the pick. To the same point, I also think there are some valid reasons why it might be dumb for the Panthers to trade that pick. Ever consider that?

Does it make sense that it might be dumb to trade the number one pick in the draft, EVEN though there may not be a player that wouldn’t be a gamble for your team?

It does for me. I’ll start by first tampering all the thoughts that certain players are sure fire picks to go number one before all the rest. Every player that is selected in the draft, any draft, is a gamble. They may have injuries, they may turn out to be a bust, they may work out in your teams favor. Even if Andrew Luck had left Stanford, he too would be a gamble.

But there are more reasons the Panthers should hold the first pick.

I'm gonna assume he means "tempering".

Before the rebuild, the chance to pick first and give your fan base the excitement of selecting any player that is available, is a chance that doesn’t happen very often.

Make good use of it, and give your fans something to cheer about.

And while the team is fulfilling this monumental selection, don’t waste the opportunity to draft a player that will create EXCITEMENT for the franchise and in Charlotte. There is no other player in the field of draftees that will mean more to the city of Charlotte and to the Carolina Panthers, than Cam Newton. If the Panthers trade the pick, there is no shot at still drafting him.

I’ve mentioned it before, and I’ll scream it again. I don’t care if Newton is a gamble, if he doesn’t change the look of the team in one season, or even if he fails to ever be an NFL star. He will for a short period of time bring energy to the fan base, will bring national recognition, and he is a player that has the stature and athleticism to provide something on the field.

This is a really, really stupid argument. Essentially "who cares if he pans out long term or not as long as he gives us a short term thrill" :nonod:

He provides some of the stupidest reasons for not trading the pick I have ever heard. When he suggests that we should keep the pick because Newton would energize the fan base even if he doesn't become a good QB, I put a bullet with his name on it in my mental chamber.

So.

We should take him even though his bust rate is high because he will put butts in seats and give us money.

However, if Richardson doesn't take him, he is just being greedy.

Interesting. :coolgleamA:

That's where he lost me. Newton should be drafted if they feel he will be the biggest asset to the team winning. Drafting a player for a years worth of excitment is completely retarded

Not sure I understand all the fuss for a 2nd round pick anyway. It's not like Hurney has a good track record when it comes to the 2nd round. I think the guy is pretty good when it comes to the first round though.

I'd rather him have all the prospects on his plate to choose between, to select the one he believes is the best fit for our team, instead of trading down to a spot where he may not be able to get the player he wants, and then, we're still crossing our fingers and hope the 2nd pick doesn't turn out like most of his 2nd round picks turn out.

First of all drafting a guy because he will create excitement and fill seats isn't necessarily smart from a coaches point of view, but it is a gold idea from a marketing point of view so it can't be totally discounted. Football is about marketing and putting a product on the field. We know winning obviously is the best marketing but it could be argued that part of the excitement is being generated by fan's perspective that bringing in Newton is part of trying to win and get a franchise QB. I think many here don't think Newton will be great to start off but will eventually be a franchise QB. That would be the first time outside of Collins 15 years ago we actually tried to get a franchise QB.

As for is it a smart coaching decision, I would say that Newton has a decent chance to be a success in the league. He has the athleticism and work ethic to succeed. If Shula is as good as his billing, he should be able to work with Newton and develop him. Seems to me that the quarterback often gets the total blame and the organization should share in that. I wonder if someone rode Russell's ass in Oakland or sent Young to counseling when he went over the edge. Seems to me that if we are investing tens of millions in these guys, they need someone to ride these guys and make sure they do what they need to do.

As for the best thing he did say:

The reason it may be dumb for Richardson and Hurney to trade that coveted pick, is because no one else really wants it either. If the Panthers trade the pick for other picks or players, to another team, they will lose value. The Panthers will get ripped off because no one else wants to take a chance with the number one pick on unproven commodities

I believe that if we don't get outstanding value for the first pick we should use it ourselves. At this point I doubt we get any great deals.

I agree somewhat, but the best marketing is a winning team. Saying you don't care if the #1 pick becomes a solid football player is just dumb IMO.

You give actual reasons for drafting Newton. IMO selling tickets for one year is a stupid reason.
