Mayock expects “feeding frenzy” for quarterbacks

“I think there’s a panic among teams that need quarterbacks. The worst thing you can do is reach for a quarterback and miss,” Mayock said.

This would play into our hands if we would make it clear we didn't want Newton and wanted to trade. A desperate team knowing they won't get one of the top 3 or 4 might be more willing to leapfrog everyone. But if all we hear is Newton, Newton, Newton.... then nobody would be willing to trade assuming we're not even open to a trade because we're set on Newton. Hurney is making a big mistake not making it public that we would openly entertain and prefer to trade. that would send teams scrambling and maybe one would panic. If not, we could always still draft Newton, or Dareus or whoever.

I don't like they way they are playing this so close to the vest without even seeming to aknowledge that the pick is for sale to the highest bidder. Maybe they're waiting till the day before to create a feeding frenzy but that approach might backfire. I'd love for them to open it up a week ahead of time to give teams to drive the price up on each other.

I think they are playing it quite well in regards to trading. We may still be undecided on the best way to try to trade down or with which team we have the best option to trade with, so keeping our intentions vague until the last second is most likely our best option.

He also predicts that we won't be part of it (link)

NFL Network’s Mike Mayock, for one, isn’t convinced the Panthers will take Newton.

“I feel very strongly that Carolina would like to trade out of the No. 1 overall pick,” Mayock said on a conference call Wednesday.

If the Panthers keep the pick, Mayock thinks they still might not take Newton. He believes Marcell Dareus and Patrick Peterson would be the other options there, interestingly not mentioning A.J. Green.

It could work the exact opposite way too. Teams see that we like Newton when they do too, and they'd be willing to see what it takes to get him from us.

i think its strange that so many teams are reaching for a QB since while the lock out is going on they cant practice or get any work done

Teams will make sure that their newly aquired QB will get a copy of their playbook even if it's against NFL rules. I can assure you that. They were discussing that on NFL network a week ago.

I agree, I think several QB's will be over drafted...like all of them.

Not only will the top two be reaches, but most of the second tier guys will go way before their value.

And considering that they will receive no coaching till CBA is in place, they will probably not get on the field till next season

False. The worst thing Hurney could do is let everyone know that we aren't interested in the first pick. That would lessen the value, unless there are multiple teams inquiring the pick. The best thing he could do is make everyone assume we like Cam or Bland, teams would have to give up more to obtain our pick.

    • I think he's gone, and rightfully so, if he turns in another losing record. The "talented roster," regardless of how true or not, is a double-edged sword. If the roster is so much improved now from 202X then why are you still producing losing seasons? On one hand, maybe that's what needs to happen. Have the GM hire the new coach, and then have the new coach pick his guy to run his system. That is typically how it works in the NFL. Not the forced inheritance deal we have had in place.
    • Hinging on Brooks to be our spark...be good if it happens... but not holding my breath....RB next draft. Morgan gambled...it would be a 2 year payoff if thing happened.
    • Only way Canales is fired is if we are attrocious everywhere....  defense /special teams and offense..  There are enough "questions" on if BY9 is the guy that ownership wouldn't fire the coach for "just" mid qb play.  Especially with as talented a roster that has played "well enough" to win some tough football games and hang in there against the top tier of the NFL ...(mostly).   Now total team suckage..yeah .. but I don't see that happening.
