Why We wont draft a QB this Year

I do not think Pike is a good fit for the offense we are planning to run, but who knows. He is tall.

I don't think we will draft a QB first. I think Plan A is to trade down. Plan B is a difficult choice between Green, Dareus, Cam and yes, Gabbert. I would be very surprised to see Cam get picked because Hurney takes safe first rounders at postions that offer the opportunity to instantly produce.

If Andrew Luck were in the draft, would we have come out and said that we are taking Luck because we were not interested in trading? I think so. Whenever Hurney talks about Cam, it is always because he is asked about Cam. He chooses his words carefully. You will never hear a team badmouth a player. We want to trade.

Panthers to pass on Newton at #1?

Former high-ranking Panthers executive Tony Softli predicts that Carolina will pass on Cam Newton and take Alabama DT Marcell Dareus with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.

"They need defensive linemen. They have for awhile," says Softli, who also has a history with the Rams. "I really think they're gonna pass on Cam Newton. ... I really believe it's gonna be the defensive tackle." While we still take everything with a grain of salt, it's important to note that Softli's info has been solid this offseason. He was the first to point out Adrian Clayborn's Erb Palsy condition, and among the first to explicitly report on Ryan Mallett's drug use at Arkansas.

Also curious why we aren't going to draft since the only thing the new coaching staff has to go on with Pike is his college stats and about 3 minutes of nfl play...

It's not like they can call him up and say "Why don't you come and work out for us."

Even if Pike is the greatest qb ever, we will never know.

Tall, rail-thin sixth rounder? Knocked for his questionable arm and lack of athleticism coming out? Next Tom Brady people.

ftr it was more or less officially announced that Luck would be the pick if he declared earlier in the year.

    • Like many of the old heads, I’ve been here for a long time.  I got a lot of respect for everyone on this board for your dedication to this team.  We’ve all been through it during the tougher years. At this point in life, I’m not one to judge anyone’s level of dedication, or their reasons why anymore.  Time, and a lot of bad football, will do that.  For me, it’s simple.  We share a common bond.  For that, I love and appreciate all of you crazy SOB’s. For me, last season was at a minimum, entertaining.  BY lead a young team to multiple come from behind 4th qtr wins.  That showed me heart, and that he has the clutch gene.  That’s the wildcard intangible.  For me, that was fun to watch even  if it was mindbogglingly frustrating at times.  Over the past two seasons, we have progressively built a better team around him.  On paper, the defense should be better this season.  That’ll help.  Let’s see what he can do as the other guys continue to develop too.  Besides, his contract is cheap for a few more years, and we just made some smart cap decisions during the draft. Let’s see how it shakes out.
    • Hiring Shula & his Cam save us playbook.
    • I would very much liked to have seen Jake Delhomme's career if Tommy Jone no hurt Jake.  I just know that roster and the leadership were destined to hit paydirt but Jake was never the same after the elbow injury, and unfortunately he was the sole reason they didn't make it back to the big one.  I think that 08 team was the best in the league, and Jake masked his inability well all season til the Arizona game put it all on display.  I'll go back to the season prior even and say the 07 team was primed to be a competitor.  Jake was off to a fantastic start that year (for a Panthers QB).  They may have been a championship caliber club for a few seasons after 08 too.
