What if Clausen wins??

Recommended Posts

What do the Panthers do if Jimmy Clausen wins the job in the preseason.

What if Jimmy's problems really were the lack of coaching, lack of play calling, lack of preparation, Otah's absense....

I have heard the argument that Jimmy was not completely to blame, so it is not out of the question that he comes back this year strong. If Jimmy does turn out to be more than servicable and Newton Can not win the job, how does the organization approach this situation??

What if pigs fly....... I could see Jimmy turning things around this year with a new OC, new QB coach, and the best motivator on the planet - competition.

So, who do we trade? Do we trade? Whats the huddle's opinion (prob that Jimmy will never be good) but, what if?

Disagree totally.

If Clausen comes out a barn burner, Newton isn't going to sniff the field this year. He may get a chance next, but if he stinks and CLausen lights it up when he does get back in, we may look at trading Newton.

That being said, the chances of that happening are extremely slim.

You're kidding yourself. Sadly, Clausen's days are numbered. It doesn't matter what he does on the field, they're paying Newton too much money to sit on the bench - and they won't get any value back for him if they trade him.

Clausen just has to recognise this and try to impress potential suitors with his play this year. He's not going to be in Carolina for much longer.

He won't.

The question was "what if"

the correct answer has already been posted as "not a bad situation to be in" and "trade bait"

Everyone has their favorites and that is fine but as fans I think what is best for the team should supersedes favorites.

I want everyone who enters camp to ball out and make the decisions of who to cut VERY difficult if not borderline impossible. I don't think any true fan can disagree with that.

There are circumstances when failure over a period of time can make one hope that a guy fails I guess (Jake Delhomme) but outside of that, which is still opinion, you should want everyone to be very good.

Bad draft pics, trades, and rookie performances should get a pass as far as the personal feelings go IMO.

I think it is possible for Clausen to be much better. Will it happen? IDK, but he is basically a rookie with game speed awareness, which could help him beat out Newton for the starting job. Now, once the actual games start, he could have shell shock from 2010 and revert very easily. it's all a crap shoot.

Clausen won't ever get a chance under the new regime.

But I would love for him to play well and spark some trade interest. A Matt Schaub type trade is probably out of the question, but I would jump at the chance to dump him for a 2nd round pick if the opportunity arose.

Let's hope his hands grow some in the next few months.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
